Thank you for all of your thoughts, between what you all said and with talking to people around the area, i think that i am going to get a lab in the end. I really did want a "differnt type" of dog but where i live and hunt it just fits better.

not sure if you got a lab or not but my wife and i were in the same boat. wanted something other than a lab like everyone else. we ended our decision when we found some chesapeke bay retrievers. they are a little stubborn but so far she has been a great dog. would recomend to anyone.

Have you looked at Golden Retrievers? IMHO Golden Retrievers are great family/bird dogs. I got my first golden retriever two years ago. A golden retriever was not on my list. After thinking about the dog I wanted & the hunting I do?
The golden retriever became my first choice for a family/bird dog.
