Biggamehunter1990, Does your puppy still have his puppy teeth? Alot of puppies go crazy just before they lose them, then slow down after the adult teeth come in. Some dogs are just chewing monsters. They make products you can sray on [apple bitter is one] that will keep a dog at bay. But the need to chew is still there. I also use rawhide chews, but alot of vets say they are bad for your dog. I also use a knotted sock. When you correct your dog for chewing make sure you have something in hand for the substitute. And use plenty of praise when they take the offering, so the pup knows this is ok. The other thing that can cause chewing is boredom, so a good run can help. I went through alot of this with my German Shorthairs, but I did get them through it. good luck, Gselkhunter

Good Luck. My 100 lb lab is an inside dog, and he finally chewed up enough stuff that I put a muzzle on him every time I left the house. After periodically wearing it for about 4-6 mo., he doen't need it anymore. He won't chew on ANYTHING. The easiest way to keep them from chewing is to give them plenty to play with and chew on... also try pigs ears. And be sure to catch him in the act and punish him for it a few times.
PS. I don't recommend a kennel run...those are for people like DOC E that obviously don't understand that if we wanted our dogs confined, we would have confined them instead of asking for alternate advice.

Here is a pic of my dog's KENNEL RUN It's 18' X 30' --- which is bigger than any single room in our house....................................Which woud YOU find more "confining" an 18' X 30' 'place of your own" or would you rather be muzzled ? He has a concrete pad covered with astro-turf to lay on - a kiddie pool in the summer, his dog food dish and water are on an elevated platform (wana guess why it's elevated?) - he has a "teather ball" that hangs from the ceiling -- he has trees to pee on - dirt to dig in -- bushes to lay under and a very nice insulated "Dogloo" dog house. How many of those things do you, dear 'BuddysMom', have in your house for your dog?

My lab went through a 1 year chewing phase that drove me craze (it included things like drywall, a couch, and trim on the outside of the house!). But here are a few things that might help. The second dog we got chewed up one shoe at 9 weeks and that was it. Some dogs are more prone to it then others.
1. Lots of things that are OK to chew on in the area. One thing that work realy well and holds interest is KONG toys! Especialy if your put peanut butter in it. They last forever Raw hide bone work well but I have found that a good chewer can be through one in a day. Tennis balls stick around a long time and hold interest.
2. They make a spray for horses for chewing on wood and such that is dog safe. You can generaly find this at a co-op or farm supply store. IT is more potent then dog supplies and leaves a bad taste in their mouth. The sour apple spray works ok but some dogs like it. Same with cayene pepper some dogs hate it some dogs lick it up. Try a few things on the pool cover and see if anything works
3. You can always try getting a dog kennel for your dog, and putting him in it when your are not home until he grows out of chewing.
4. Also ALWAYS dicipline your dog if you catch him in the act.

I think my dogs have the best of both worlds. They have 1/8 acre fenced with trees dog house, pool, toys during the day and the house at night. They get tons of attention and their own dog beds, but they get to have their freedom outside also. They go in and out when they want while we are home.
