Default 13 week Chocolate

I have a 13 week old Chocolate. He is doing real good so far but every now and again he just gets distracted to the point that he doesn't even know that I'm there. He already retrieves on command and returns to my left side. He knows "here" "sit" and were still working on "stay". Near the end of a training session he starts roaming around. Should I shorten the training sesion or make him work through the distractions? How early is to early for a shock collar? How violent should I get this early to keep him on track?[>:]

Thanks,
kevbo

I can tell by your post that you are training by just "shooting from the hip". You need to get on a good modern, sequential training program. I would suggest "Smartwork" and "Smartfetch", both written by Evan Graham.

At 13 weeks, the training should still be all about fun and getting the dog 'birdy'. NO enforced obedience or enforced training until the dog is 5 to 6 months old.

NO offense but some of the guys on this board are the most impatient people I have ever heard of. The dog is 3 months old, give him a break!!!

No kiddin ! People try to train without a plan (books) and want a finished dog at 6 months of age [:'(] Kevbo needs to slow down -- let the pup be a pup -- and train with an actual sequential game plan.

Keep training sessions short and sweet he is young, let him be a pup.

all good posts...when you get yourself involved with a dog, its a life long commitment. training never really stops. my dog is about 1.5years old, and i am still training her, excersizing her, and enjoying every minute of her. keep your sessions short, with a lot of praising. and slow down and enjoy yuor dog.
