Hello, I am new to the pointer world. I currently have a lab that is basically a lazy house dog. Has no interest in hunting at all. I'm planning on getting a GSP this summer or early fall. Many of the training books I have read give strong advise not to train your pointer to sit. Not at the early stages at least. This dog will be a house/hunting dog and house mate to my lab. What kind of training schedules do you pointer owners use.... come/heel/whoa/sit/get my beer?...?
What commands do you train your pointers and how soon is a good age to start! I'm all about letting the pup be a pup, but how will I know when shes ready for some serious training?
Any advice would be appreciated!

From what I've seen, heard and read you can start training pups very early with the basic commands( the bring my beer command may have to wait a while). The biggest thing seems to be to teach them by playing games with them, make everything a teaching experience, and keep the sessions short. Hope that helps you.
