I haven't seen a wiemer hunting anything but a biscuit around my neck of the woods. The people in my area who have wiemies just wanted a good family dog.
They make great pets and quite nice looking dogs to boot. But the downside of this from what I have heard is that the dogs are losing their hunting instincts.
There are apparently plenty of good hunting wiemers still out there. You could find out pretty quickly if yours has hunting blood by getting a live quail or pigeon and letting the dog sniff it out. If the dog goes crazy from the smell of the bird or points it you will be fine.
If the dog is responding well to it's obedience training you have good dog that would worth trying to make a hunter out of.
Good Luck Bro.

I know a bunch of guys around here who hunt with their Weims. There's even a Weimeraner hunting club here. As far as I know, they make good hunters. The only downside I hear is that they are a little aggressive and foul tempered. I was a little surprised that Short Hair said they were good family dogs. I'd heard their attitude could make them a little bit of a problem.
I've never had one, so I can't say for sure. But again, the guys I know that have them, hunt them.

My buddies uncle hunts three of them, and keeps them inside. I always considered them like a GSP, just a diff color. They were a bundle of dynamite inside though. Both breeds are lively, and three of them inside was NUTS! Just my opinion.

I have owned 2 Wiemies and both were very good hunters.
A little boneheaded sometimes but as they got older they really mellowed. My first one was really protective of my kids, if I was outside and someone drove up to the house he was very friendly but if the kids were outside with out me nobody could get out of their vehicle. He would also walk down the long lane with my daughter to wait on the school bus. Once a pickup truck stopped and Doc attacked the man when he put his window down, don't know what he wanted but he sure was not going to bother my little girl.Another time I had some Amish doing some block work for me and when I got home the one worker removed a rag from his pocket and raised his 4' level to clean it off Doc ripped the whole ass out of his pants when he raised that level over his head, but he was with the guy all day and even shared his lunch. Guess he thought he was going to hit me or something.

i have been to the wiemer club of america field trials. i know these dogs are trained by pros, but of what i seen, they were great! i think they make great hunting dogs. i hunted with a 6 mth old with limited training and her natural instincts were great! i plan on getting one myself!

I have a two year old and she is finally mellowing enough to pay attention to what's around her. Up til now she simply followed the lead of my older Gordon Setter. I think she has potential if I get her out alone. She is also the sweetest and most obedient dog you will ever meet. I agree with the comment above about being a GSP of a different color (and bigger eyes), as I also have a GSP and their behaviors and personalities are very similar.
