Default looking for a new dog maybe a German S.H.P.

I am looking into buying a new dog. I want a family dog that will hunt upland birds. I was thinking about a lab but I reasently heard about German Short Hairs. Are they good family dogs? Also can I let it out and have it stay around the house?

I raise German Shorthair Pointers and they are great family dogs. I let both of my dogs out and they do not run away. It depends how well you train them also. They are great upland hunting dogs and with the right training they can even be good waterfowl dogs. I have an upcoming litter of german shorthair pointer pups. You can email me at [email protected] and I can give you some more information about the breed and my litter that is approaching. The pups are $250 for males and $300 for females. Pics, pedigrees, and references available upon request.
Thanks
Jason

i have a female GSP and she is the best dog with people and other animals i have ever had. she had never even been around kids for the first year of her life, and she is around them now, and loves them! she loves everyone she meets unless they are not supposed to be there! great family dog, great gaurd dog, and great hunter. just be prepared for a dog with TONS of energy... and they can and will jump fences (mine's a 6' stockaide fence!!!) of the see a bird or something they want! good luck and i would deff. recommend this great dog!!!

I have 2 shorthairs, one is 9 years, and the other is 8 months. They are very loyal dogs.I have a 2 year old daughter, and those dogs let her do any thing to them, and don't even flinch. They do have alot of energy, but if you run them you should not have a problem.

I have a 3 yr DK and she is a great dog. She is great with my 10 month old son he climbs all over her and pulls her ears, wiskers and tail and has never got aggressive. I think she enjoys the attention she gets from him climbing on her.

I let my dog out off the leash all the time I think that is more a training issue then the type of dog. You bond and work with your dog they will listen to you.

Now ,these are dogs that have a lot of energy, they need to be ran. A 30 minute walk on a leash will not do anything for this dog they need to run. If they don't get enough exercise they tend to get bored and can become distructive. This is a problem with a lot of hunt breeds.

I would recommend this breed to anyone as long as you have time to spend with and exercise the dog. They don't do as well as a Lab at becoming a couch potato. ( I am not picking on Labs I have owned them before also they just aren't as wired as a G.S.P)

i have a gsp and she is great as a pet and a hunter. she lets my kids climb over the top of her. i have taken her to sportsmens shows and let thousands of people pet her. she is a real sweet dog. she has never caused a problem. if you like the shorthair, you can consider a german wirehaired pointer also. i have one as well and she is also great with kids, been to the shows, and has even laid in the middle of the isle at a large sportsmans show and let people walk around her, over her, and pet her. again, she is an excellent dog as a pet and a hunter. they both act great with kids, adults, in the car, and in the house. fyi i also have a lab.
