My dogs (2) are on self feeders. Some have said that that dogs will get fat on full feed all the time but I have done this for about 20 years and never have had this happen once. You must check every couple days to see that they are not off feed but I have started pups on this type of feeder usually when they are about a year old. They first must learn who is in charge of the feed etc.

Mine get fed twice a day...as close to 12 hour intervals as I can get. As far as feeding the morning of the hunt, that depends. If we are hunting uplands yes, if we are hunting ducks (confined to the boat all day) no. If they don' t get fed in the morning, I bring along some dog biscuits as rewards or for a mid-morning snack.

I fill his bowl once a day and he eats at his leisure. He also gets 3 large milk bones every morning. No change in how I feed him on hunting days.

Pups (under 18 mos.) get fed twice a day, older dogs get fed in the eveing. I supplement the hell out of them during the hunting season, too. Glucosamine, energy snacks and tooth care snacks are used quite a bit around our kennel.

When he was a pup I fed three times a day.
Now I feed twice a day.
On the morning of a hunt I don't bother feeding him, because hes too excited to eat!
