I'm starting to think that it may even be less of an issue of enforcement than one might think. Some people claim that law enforcement won't do anything, but maybe it is because not a whole lot needs to be done except for maybe cracking down on the folks who like to cry wolf. Think about some of the comments by people here. They think that anybody out and about during fox season is actually poaching deer. They hear dogs barking in the general vicinity of their property so just assume that the deer hound hunters have invaded their property. Put yourself in the place of the law enforcement officer who has to drive ten miles out in the country because Joe Anti-Dog thinks that those fox hunters are trying to poach deer and it turns out to be unsubstantiated. Or you just reponded to a call where Joe Anti-Dog thinks that the deer hound MIGHT have cut across the corner of his south 40 pasture. After that happens a time or two, you are likely gonna start taking reports from these folks with a grain of salt, and you are gonna be much less likely to put handcuffs on somebody just because some complaintant can't tell the difference between fox and deer hunting. Something to think about.

There is a broader context to this, and if you don't realize it, then you have even less of a clue.

MY THOUGHTS EXACTLY- you can only cry wolf so many times.

This landowner like many has failed to do their job and contact the authorities about there problems. They feel they have to come to a forum and rant and rave instead of calling the local authorities and getting the issue resolved. ignorance is not an excuse.
Hokieman,

Perhaps you didn't read the post, or perhaps I was not clear. The game warden has been out several times (due to our calls), but has not stopped them from doing what they were doing.

RE: ***URGENT VIRGINIA HUNTING DOG OWNERS***

who is crying wolf?? Dudes, I have been living in Va for 33 yrs out of 33 yrs of life and I have never seen or even know a fox hunter in this area. Im just telling yall that every dog owner I know runs dogs out of season at some point during the year. Do I snitch?? No I don't. I try not to bring attention to it, I plead with them and beg them, but it does no good. I don't have to snitch, everyone knows exactly what's going on, could the game wardens come out, but while they are in Prince George co, who's watching Sussex co?? see gents, it's not just isolated cases, it's common place here. I know someone that ran dogs last weekend, what do I do?? arrest them?? it's far bigger than that. What you guys are failing to see is that I want to save dog hunting in Va, that is why Im pleading with them, b/c if it doesn't get better soon, it will be gone and I don't want it to go. But thenagain Im just crying wolf right?

I keep hearing fox hunters. So exactly how many fox hunters are there in VA? The Technical Report says 40% of the licensed hunters in VA will hunt with hounds 1 time or more. That's 88,000 people. Fox hunters make up only 5% of the total hound hunters. So that's 4,400 fox hunters in the whole state of VA. There are 95 counties in VA. That's less than 50 per county. Not very many is it? Throw in many are up north and it's even less in the SE areas. I have a hard time believing all the dog running I see out of season is from just those 50 or less people.

Rick your numbers are wrong. There is 70-75,000 deer hound hunters, 24,000 fox hound hunters ( red & grey ), 12,500 coon hunters, 16,000 bear hound hunters, 53,000 rabbit hunters. that adds up to around 175,000 hunting dog owners in va.

Where's your source of this data?

They only sell 220,000 licenses. 40% of 220,000 is 88,000. Doggers do not make up 85% of the hunters.

Contemporary Overview of Hound-Hunting in Virginia
Today, approximately 40% of hunters in Virginia use dogs to pursue game (Jagnow et al. 2008).
Of those who hunt with dogs, 65% hunt deer, 33% hunt rabbits, 11% hunt raccoons, 7% hunt bear, and 5% hunt foxes. Other popular game species hunted with dogs include waterfowl (9% of dog-hunters), squirrels (8%), and quail (7%). Statewide, 30% of deer hunters in Virginia use dogs; however, more than 65% of deer hunters in the Tidewater region (roughly east of Interstate 95) use dogs. Approximately 35% of bear hunters in Virginia use dogs (Jagnow et al. 2007, 2008). At least 90% of raccoon and rabbit hunters likely use dogs. Fox hunter participation is being investigated through the 2007-2008 annual hunter survey (a survey mailed to a random
sample of licensed hunters following each season).
