Default Rescue Dogs

This is more out of curiosity, but has anyone here actually gone down to the dog pound/Humane society/animal rescue and adopted a dog that turned out to be a good hunter? If you have what were the circumstances; breed, age, previous training, etc?

I'm not trying to get into a "my mut can beat your pure bred" thread but I've seen questions regarding this on this site (usually, I have a 5 yr old dog, can I teach it to hunt or I have a part X, part Y, will it be a good bird dog) andknow the answers (it depends) but was curious if anyone here has actually pulled off a pygmallion/eliza doolittle on a rescued dog.

I know of someone who pulled an Audrey Hepburn out of a My Fair Lady. Five year old GSP, calm and quiet, listens well and former owner was a hunter. Too bad the new owner doesn't.

Mite so he found a trained, calm GSP at a shelter and he doesn't hunt. Yes that is sad, but at least he found a good dog.

Thanks for the input.

I love the way boykins look but don't know much about their temperment. I mainly do upland hunting, no waterfowl yet, but I hear they are very versitile. That would be awsome to rescue a good gun dog. I hope to get me a good one when the kids are older and i have more time at home. It would probably be more likely than finding one at a doggie orphanage and trying to train it. Just to clarify - I'm really not looking to do either one but am interested in other's success stories.

I've had and known approxamatly half a dozen boykins and everyone of them would hunt with you in the morning and nap on the sofa with you in the afternoon... I take my year and half old male fishing with me and he just sits and watches the world go by... Great little dogs

I know some fellas that had some luck getting hog dogs doing this. Most that worked looked to have a lotof Catahoula in them. Pretty common in Tejas pounds.

dad and i went and brought home a adult treeing walker...wasnt from the pound, but might as well have been! guy had him chained up out back..GAVE him to us FREE. said he wanted to be a coon hunter but never had the time...only coon that dog ever saw was a nasty ole pelt that the dog carried around the back yard since he was a pup.

who knows what dad was thinkin, but we brought that sorry ole Walker dog home with us...

dad showed him a caged coon and that was the only training it took...he was a pure coon dog no doubt about it. ive since ran with a pile of coonhounds and i would still to this day put him up against any of them...and ive ran with a pile of grand nite champions and real good dogs.

he was just a natural coon hound i guess....he was one of those once in a lifetime hounds i think....still cant believe how it all played out...all the odds were against us...that dog should probably never treed a coon for us...just usually dont happen...if you dont train them as a pup and all their life, chances are great that its just gunna be a mangy ole mutt that doesnt hunt....
