trap some coon leave them loose so he can see them run off this might help keep taking him
with other dogs .when you get to tree pet him up good try to get him to bark .dont leave him loose at the tree at all .also you can tie him away from tree about 10yards back or so If he barks go back and pet him.Its going to be a tuff road to hoe .patience lots of patience good luck its a fun sport

Hi there,
It takes a whole lot more than one time to the woods and a caged coon to make a treedog. Have you ever heard the term, "blood, sweat, and tears?" Well, that is what it takes. If your dog has it in him, then he needs exposure more than anything. Not exposure to lots of caged coons, but exposure to the woods, trees, creeks, animal scent, trailing, loading in the truck, etc. Take him BY HIMSELF a lot. He will learn to hunt his own game, and take him with other dogs some, too. It takes a lot of work. You can't take a new dog out expecting to kill lots of coons, and when he trees, tie him back and work him...don't just shoot the coon out right away if you don't have to. If you can, get the dog to notice the coon and get him fired up. Hiss and slap the tree (but don't let anyone see ya doing that or it might look like you got rabies or something), and carry on. Tell the dog what a good dog he is. They say a good treedog doesn't need everything shot out to them, but another school of thought says shoot all you can to them. I would think they are both true. Good luck, and more than that, just work hard with the dog for a while. He may need to get used to you, first, and then he may just need to get used to ranging out in the woods. Like already stated by ringneck....patience!

He has a biteup bottom lip from today when he caught the coon I let out of the trap and it has been bleeding and stuff but my neighbor said it will be fine I have seen worse in my years coon hunting . Tonight he jumped up on the tree a few times but he didnt bark or anything like that. Im jus going to continue to take him out and set traps for him.... Hopefully he will come along

i read an article about a guy with the same peoblem. He put a live coon in a wire cage and put the dogs food right in front of it. The dog was afraid at first but eventualy became hungary . So he finally became angry at the coon took the food and has treacked and treed since.

Let him see a coon go up the tree. When the dog gets to the tree tie him to it and put his feet on the tree. everytime he gets off the tree put him back on the wood. Be patient if its in him he will get the idea.

Try putting out a feeder bucket. Once the coon are hitting it take him out alone. Dont make a drop right on top of the bucket, hunt to it. He has to track before he can tree, if you know your hunting him on fresh track and he's not intrested don't wast any more time with him. You've already shown him a caged coon so he really dosen need another one just get him in the woods.
