RE: VA hunting club

Hounds, Hounds, Hounds

Well I've hunted with them and enjoyed it a hunt club called tater run in charles city down near butch. I learned a few things you had to be quick ...lol killed quite a few deer with hounds the deer seemed to always back track them...lol and if your leading the dog drive your chances well for me increased!..lol it's excited either way as long as I get out to hunt I'm happy.

I own four blue tick beaglesfrom a great bloodline, purhcased them last year from a gentleman well known to breeding out of lynchburg. 3 females and one male. I'm happy with them, people ask all the time about where I got them because from the first day out they jumped rabbits beyond that of others at4 months without any field training..

Butch when you started at Lychburg and headed up 29 to Amherst that whole part of the state is Hound hunting that is all they do, but shortly past Amherst there would have been Route 151 take a left and the whole left side is a two week deer season and no hound hunting is allowed it runs for miles and if you go about 10 miles you could hang a left at Piney River and head up to the National forest if you are interested in checking it out I can give you better directions but you would find some peace and quiet up there. You may could check with some farmers on that side of151 for permission as they arn't as pressured by the guys looking to run dogs. But all in all Hunting it is getting tough to find in Va. My cousin use to hunt that side and took a monster 10 pointer a few years back.

VaSavage, Never Heard of Blue Tick Beagles but if they run rabbits I wouldn't get rid of them goodRabbit Dogs are hard to find. Where in Woodbridge do you live?

PhoenixMA where do you live?

ButchA I edited this after I read your cooment from the state trooper about the size of deerI believe he is right in his comment about peaks of otter but that is not they only place for big deer. Back in the 40's and 50's Va. staterd a restocking program (We had no Deer) we were buying the deer from Alabama and Pennsylvania and as you know the deer are bigger in Pa. so even today the counties that were stocked with the Pa. deer produce the bigger bucks.

I will keep in touch

Thanks for the reply, Rebel Dog... I ought to cruise back out around Amherst, Lynchburg, Bedford areas and have a real good look around!

For what it's worth - I'm in the west end of Richmond near Parham Rd, Patterson Ave (Route 6) area. If anyone is coming through, stop on over and hang out for a while!

Rebel,

I know the area you speak of right around the corner from me, there's a lot of deer that cross thru there.

But since all the contruction going on I'm sure they have moved on..lol Neabsco CreeK that first developement area as you pass the Wawa I use to hunt plenty of deer use to roam around there. This was early 90's about 91-93. Also at the new high school freedom, I know there's plenty of deer I've counted about 12 grazing on the grass with 4 nice bucks a few months back.

a 13 year old boy killed a HUGE 11 pt(260lbs) in dale city this past year. i think it was killed behind kmart.

i used to shoot rifles right there where you all are talking about in the mid 70's. we would shoot on the power lines on cardinal drive across rt 1 before all the houses went in. my dad was a va power employee at the time.

I saw the same deer you are speeking of and actually had a Turkey fly across the road in front of me at the new intersection.

There is no question that there are some pigs around there but I think the boy may havesnuck in I don't think any of it is Huntable anymore, Where Freedom High School is I saw some guys getticketed there last year. Lets face it the whole area will never be the same Cherry Hill road has been leveled I hunted Turkey and Deer over there, but not anymore. We are holding on to our Duck Blinds though.

Good Luck in your endevors I will keep in touch.

Rebel, I live in Virginia Beach.

I've been reading about the hunting in Prince william and dale city area. Funny I actually know many of the areas you guys are talking about. I have relatives that live in Dumfries and i used to work in Woodbridge on Smoketown road. My Old man grew up in Dumfries and graduated from Gar-Field.

Small commonwealth i guess.
