Default Virginia Gobblers

I've spent the last three saturdays scouting for gobblers in the national forest in Bath but haven't heard a peep. What's the word? Last year at this time they couldn't keep quiet. Anyone have the inside scoop?

I've heard a few gobbles, but it has been slow. We've had some high winds lately, makes it hard to hear anything.

I know its getting late, but I'm going scouting this weekend if the rain lets up. I've got 1 spot in NOVA that holds a nice sized flock but that's it.

I went out last weekend and had two birds gobblin and struttin early, around 7:00. Saw a total of 39 birds that morning. Went out again yesterday late (about 4:30) and noticed toms struttin but silent. Saw a total of 23 birds. There was a light on and off rain at that time. I noticed on both trips that the jakes are still up close with the toms and the toms are strutting together. What I mean is that they don't seem to be competing yet. One of the groups I saw had three toms stutting and 6 jakes within a 30 to 45 yard diameter. I thought with the early warmth we have had, things might have fired up a little early. We will just have to see what next week brings!!!

Southampton Va, did not hear a thing on Sat. We saw 9 birds, 2 hens, 3 jakes and 4 long beards. i hope that they are more talkative this weekend. I also hope that they are going back to the same place I saw them Sat.
