WE HAVE REAL GOOD LUCK WITH RAT TERRIORS. NOTHING WRONG WITH A BLOOD HOUND BUT THEY ARE TRAINED UNDER STRICT SUPERVISION. A HOUND THATS JUST TRAINED FOR DEER WILL MOST TIMES TAKE THE FRESHEST TRACK IT FINDS. THATS WHY EVERYTIME YOU PUT ON A BIG OLE BUCK TRACK A COUPLE HOURS OLD IT WILL COME OUT RUNNING DOES..................TONY

What do you mean? A deerhound like a bluetick, black and tan, beagle, etc. will have a long bawl mouth when he opens on a track. a running or treeing walker will have choppy, short bark usually. The problem has been stated above about hounds taking the freshest track available and not actually bloodtrailing a deer. I use hounds because i already have them and they work great, they wont bark much if you have them on a leash anyway while bloodtrailing.

blood hound would be my first choice. after that, i'd get a black and tan or a red bone. most deer dogs, or atleast all the one's i use to have, would stay on a blood trail and would not break off on a "fresher" track. we use to run dogs back in the early 80's to the end of the 90's and all i owned were black and tans, red bones and blue ticks.
