Green Swamp update..

hunting a scrape and rubs...will not give details.:)

Saw 2 big bodied deer running into a cypress dome...that makes 6 deer seen so far this year..at the Green Swamp

Lots of campers..and hunters..more than usual..heard about 8 shots before 10:30 game wardens everywhere ...I was checked as well. This year they are hiding in the woods..I'm serious.

i really love to hear that LE is in the woods, but then again i am not, most of ours won't go into the woods unless there is reason, they don't want to walk around and ruin it for us.......at least that is what i was told at one time...glad youre seeing some deer as well......Good Luck

There were 4 different trucks on Powder,,,a jeep was pulled over..I can't beleive how wet the swamp is...I'm ok with it. It was cold enough this morning that no mosqitoes were out...They came out at 9:00 :)

Chuck,

Glad you have seen some deer. I have only hunted five times this year, but seen nothing yet. )-: Where you stoped by the game wardens in the woods or on a main road? I really like that they are out there.

I am bummed that they are trapping hogs at green Swamp. I was planning on trying some hog hunting during small game season, but I may try to find another WMA. )-:

Slay a big one for me.

Cheers,
Chris

RE: Green Swamp update..

They were backed up off the main roads and on the main roads..I saw about 7 different wardens in all. ..

RE: Green Swamp update..

Chuck,

Wow, 7 wardens. I wonder if there are some serious voilations at Green Swamp. I would like to think that most of hunters are legal and ethical, but like Huntnma said that wardens would not be wondering around unless there is a reason.

Cheers,
Chris

I love the wardens...lessens the rift raft.

RE: Green Swamp update..

Chuck,

I agree 100%. I don't really want to be in the woods with people doing illegal things. Not to mention if they are armed it is not a good situtation. I like to see the wardens too.

I am glad they are there enforcing. I want to find one (warden)to clarify if I can use a muzzleloader during small game. But if they (SWFWMD)are catching all of the hogs at Green SwampI don't know if I will go hog hunting at Green Swamp. )-;

Cheers,
Chris

3 deer!!!! Yikes, that is pitiful too. What happened to the deer in Green Swamp? Did SWFWMD trap and remove them too?

Cheers,
Chris

Thinking of heading out this week to the swamp, one more time..... maybe ill try rollin around in crushed corn, smashing some ole rott'n banana's on me, carry around a treated telephone pole, hang some sent, eat some Cheeto's and accidentally drop a couple (heard they love um) use my hog call anddig a wallow.... think ill see um then? :D but for real....this yrs been a bust in the swamp as far as im concerned compaired to past years. The flip side is ive seen way more snakes![&:]haha

Chuck7 11-27-2007 02:24 PM

RE: Green Swamp update..

I've seen no snakes...but a whole lot more hunters..bigger deer tracks...seen about 6 deer total..heard squealing hogs 2 times..MOSQUITOES were the worst ever...clouds of them..pretty wet considered the little bit of rain we've had...
but no action...yet

Masquito's actually helped me out the other day! how you ask? well as the were suckin the blood plum out of me, they were also lifting me off the dang ground giving me a better vantage point HAAAAA!!!!!!!!!!! mannnn they are bad! Warning for those hunting the wet stuff, watch for watermoccisins!! ran across several in one day and they are not friendly when you feak them out with a size 12 boot:DI too hve ran across a few tracks, mostly smaller probably doe and ZILLIONS of hog tracks. May head out tomarrow afternoon for sun down.

RE: Green Swamp update..

Ive been out to the swamp 3-4 times in the last week. Finally i have seen some action but not what i was intending to see. Jumped a total of 3 does. One was pissed off lol... heading back on a old road trial at dark. Walked right up on her and she was off to the cypress lines. Once she made it in the tree line, she snorted at least 3 times...by the sounds coming from her, thought someone let a Brahma Bull loosein the woods:DNo bucks yet....and the kicker is, NO HOGS.... how can there be soooo many hogs and no sightings anywhere? So much pressure, i believe everything has turned nocturnal, only coming out after dark. Not giving up yeteven though i say everytime im not going back haaaaaa!

strutnbuck 12-06-2007 07:42 AM

RE: Green Swamp update..

The most likely reason you are seeing fewer deer is because the water is down and they are in the cypress. They have everything they need in there, water, food, cover, and thick areas to bed in! I'll bet that if you go get in the middle of a big cypress dome that opens up in the middle, you'll see more deer, maybe even shoot one. I know you'll have a hard time no looking at more than 50-70 yards of woods all around, but you have to be where thay are!

Chuck7 12-06-2007 07:52 AM

RE: Green Swamp update..

You guys are reading my mind...I'm not afraid to hunt in the area you are talking about HOWEVER; my concern is the 1 mile hike back that you are dragging out the deer.. I talked to a couple of old timers and they have mentioned without help you will not get the deer out if it's any decent size. These areas are no where near a trail so it will be tough dragging..BUT I do plan to spend 80 % of my hunting that is left ..hunting in those thick cypress domes and deep.

Concerning the mosquitoes..Thank God for Thermacell..

Strutnbuck

:DI wish..try 20-30 yds..it gets mighty thick in there my friend.

RE: Green Swamp update..

I've been there turkey hunting. With the water down you should find some good trails in the big cypress head that you would not see if the waters up. If 20-30 yards is the best you can do in a good head then that will be better than sitting out on the edges. You will increase your chances of seeing a buck for sure!

Chuck7 12-06-2007 10:35 AM

RE: Green Swamp update..

Amen Strunbuck..I've got a place all planned out that I know has deer..it's also THICK THICK THICK ...and a good mile back to the truck ..BUT I need venison..I plan to hunt it a few times..I've also got more THICK spots..No more more slackin for me...I'm giving my 100% best effort.

Gettin pumped ,

Rebel,

Very interesting links. I cannot believe that some Seminole Indians were still living in GS into the 20th Centrury. I thought the bugs were bad, I would hate to live their all the time!

I've spent some time in Green Swamp. Its so much easier to whack a deer above the FL state line. You FL hunters are hard core.

SCguide,

I assume you live in SC now? I grew up there and the hunting up north is sooo much better. But I am in Florida now, so I hunt Green Swamp. (-: Yes, it is very hard to hunt there. )-: But I would rather be in Green Swamp sweeting and getting bit by bugs then sitting in my house watching TV.

Chris

Well, ive been in the G.Swamp more than i planedalready this year and not because im hauling them out either[&:].I have jumped a few doe either walking & stalking thru the palmetto's or on my way back to the truck when its dark enough out thatunless you have a flashlight, your not making it back to your truck. Jumped a doe the other night and it was doing just that, walking out of a cypress dome at dark. She was pissed and retreated back, snorting all the way. As for hauling them out, im not looking forward to that!!! as its so dang thick its hard enoughjust walking out on your own:DIm looking more for hogs but no luck yet[>:]Everything seems to have adopted nocturnal behaviours due to pressure, only showing after dark.

RE: Green Swamp update..

Jlbspd, With SWFWMD trapping and removing the hogs from GS it will only get harder for you to locate one. )-: Good luck though and at least you are seeing some does.

Cheers,
Chris

i might be heading to GS this weekend. if i go, it will only be to shoot a hawg. too far of a drive for me to spend serious time scouting andpreping stand locations. last time i was in GS, me and a buddy shot 6 hawgs in one morning. took us all day to drag them out.

Hey partners,
I've seen a few deer myself...I need to get higher in the trees , use my eyes more , and everything else is working..90 % of the deer have just appeared out of nowhere...so nodding off is not good.

PS ..the deer have super sonic noses..:)

Chuck,

Yep deer have great sense of smell. That is why I try to hunt into the wind. Post pictures of the big one when you get it!

Im heading into the Swamp today or tomarrow...Im more a avid hog hunter than deer. On the other hand my buddy is a deer guy so we have it covered:D...I just cant believe all the times ive been out there this year, i havent ran across one dang hog! The land is tore up! but nothing[>:]. I havent found any fresh stuff, rubs, wallows or the like. Everything ive found looks like it was done just prior to opening day. Have they already trap'd out alot of them? I heared they were discussing it but wasnt sure if they started. The only thing i can think of is they are in the cypress domestoo, just as the deer seem to be.

Jlbspd - The last issue of woods and water talked about them trapping hogs at Green Swamp. I believe SWFWMD has removed about 400 so far this year. No wonder you cannot find any. )-:

Chuck - Ok, I will be checking. (-:

Out in the Swamp today...Found a cypress dome with tons of active trails. Looks like a major trafficintersection:)but didnt see anything. Deff a BIG BIG hog living somewhere in there by thefoot prints it leftand lots of deer tracks. This is near where i jumped a doe last week. Decided on walking in where she was heading out last week and Dah Dah!!!! think i found the neighborhood:Dbut who knows lol! Not sure when ill be able to make it back though. If i can, im puting up a stand the day before. Would leavestand out there but the likelyhood of someone stealing it is always high[>:]. Sad you cant leave them out these days... May hide a trail camera there. As for the hogs...why not have an extended season on them? maybe open it up other times of the year.

I've never had a stand stolden from there..Everyone I've meant out there this year have been very nice and have offered me the use of thier stands.and showed me where to hunt..I won't be around any bayheads..I'm hunting a hammock. I do have 3 bayheads I hunt but will hunt them the last week of Dec. Good luck .The weather is supposed to be thunder storms this weekend. Once my vacation starts I ;ll leave my stand out there for 2 weeks..But when i only hunt sat..I bring it home..I just don't want a hunter to walk up on my spot..took 6 years to find it.;)

jlbspd 12-13-2007 07:45 PM

RE: Green Swamp update..

Im not saying everyone will steal...but its that 1% of people[>:]... and walking up to where your stand "used to be" will ruin a season. My buddy had his stand stolen there last year and i had my stand tampered with. Someone was in it, i could tell because they had actually moved it to a different direction on the same tree. If i cant pull something out of this spot i found today, im giving up on the swamp for a whileand heading to Georgia :D

Chuck7 12-14-2007 02:07 AM

RE: Green Swamp update..

You are correct...there is that 1 %...

"If i cant pull something out of this spot i found today, im giving up on the swamp for a whileand heading to Georgia ":D

LOL I don't have that option..I simply have to raise my hunting skills and rely on God..The game is in there. The Green Sawamp is my 2nd home .:)I'm there so much I feel it's mine. It actually does belong to my Heavenly Father.
Merry Christmas

I think Green Swamp East has a harvest rate of about 55 man days per deer harvested. So you have to go alot! )-: Can anyone give an update on the deer they have checked at Green Swamp East?

I thought it said 19 deer and 84+ hogs out of Rockridge Rd.as of yesterday evening. Ill try to get an update and let ya know...

RE: Green Swamp update..

Wow, I wonder how many hunters have been through the Rockridge Gate this year looking for deer? I would like to do my own man day calc. I wonder if anything can be done by the FWC to improved the harvest?

Anyone have a count from the 471 gate?

Cheers,
Chris
