Coon Huntin tips.....
#1
Its been 20-25 yrs ago for me.
My mind is a little cloudy....<img src=icon_smile_dead.gif border=0 align=middle>
With out dogs, give me some good advice. Gotta get rid of a "?small?" population of these critters. I have about 500 acres I have to cover excluding a swamp line. Might as well take my 3 boys to school on this subject and could really use some good tactics.
Thanks,
FirstBow

Sounds like coon hunting is going to be coon traping. Get several live traps and bait them up. A piece of fried chicken wing, back or neck is good bait. Be prepared to get a bunch of possums, cats and maybe an occasional dog.

Timber's right on this one. Make sure you bait is fresh and cooked. Some people will put out a dead fish and wonder "why they ain't catchin". Coons are more finiky than possums. Also drippin's from your outside grill will work well.
You'll be hard pressed to kill them during the daylite unles you can find their den tree. Even then, they might not come out til to dark to see.
Good Luck. Capt Brad.

It seems where I come from in Texas that we do this a little differently. Check your local laws before doing this but we just drive around at night and use a spotlight. When you see some eyes in the tree get out of the truck, load your gun and shoot the coon, while your buddy shines the light on him.
P.S. I wouldn't recommend doing this during the deer season, you may get accused of spotlighting deer, and your deer herd dwill be more spooky

I suppose I'll have to do more checkin' before I take my big ol' red light to the woods and start blastin'.
As I said its been awhile and what I remember is we humped thru the woods checking out the area with red lights.

There hasn't been any mention of jaw traps. One very effective way if you have a creek or pond is to cover the pan with aluminum foil and place in a well used area in shallow water(If it is not cold enough to freeze over. The racoon will see the shiny object in the water and have to have it. For the same reason, bore a 2" hole the side of a log. Ball up aluminum foil to about 1.5" diameter. Place the ball in the hole. Drive 16d nails through the edge of the hole at an angle so that you can't remove the ball. The racoon will walk down the log, reach in and grab the ball. They won't let go of the ball even when you approach. Another set we used was to make a narrow rectangle with branches. Place the bait (fish of any kind, stinkbait glob, dog food) at the back of the rectangle. Use a jaw trap with a heavy wire attached tied to a stout tree or limb. Dig a shallow hole at the entrance and place the jaw trap in the hole level with the surface. Cut a piece of paper to just cover the jaws and carefully cover with sifted dirt. He will come in to investigate and get caught at the entrance. Those are three of the methods we used when I was a kid.
