FLORIDA HUNTERS!

I see a few guys from FL here and there on this forum... but then again im fairly new. Who here hunts in FL? If so, where abouts do you usually hunt? Just trying to meet some other people in the FL hunting community..

My name is Adam, Im 21 yrs old and live in Tallahassee FL and im a 4th year FLORIDA STATE SEMINOLE. Im originally from Melbourne Fl- born and raised in FL and live for the outdoors. Im young, but have hunted in my fair share of places in the state. I hunt almost exclusively public land, but i am fortunate enough to get an invite here and there on private. Im also Vice Chairman of Students for the Second Amendment at Florida State Univeristy. Anyway, just bored and wanted to get an idea of other people who hunt in FL!

Welcome to the forum Adam!

Well, myfavorite WMA is 23 miles SW of Tallahassee, Aucilla! Over the years they have changed many things down there. When I started going to Aucilla back in the 80's, Aucilla consisted of 3 counties, Wakulla, Jefferson and Taylor. Jefferson being the best which is in the middle of the WMA and the only county in FL that extends from the Georgia line to the gulf. I use to camp at the FL Forestry camp ground on HWY 98 and the ST. Marks River and down the road from ST.Marks Wild Life Sanctuary. It was $4.00 per day. It had Men and Women rest rooms with Hot and Cold showers and kept serviced by the state daily. It also had a dumping station for travel trailer waste tanks. The Wakulla jail inmates on work release, would bring each numbered spot on the camp grounds, a load of fire wood every day. The FL Forestry Office was across the road from the camp grounds.

Well, in 1997 Wakulla County took it over and the daily rate went to $8.00 per day and the rest rooms were not serviced daily, hot water heaters for the showerswould go down and the county would fix them when they had time. The camp grounds were not policed like they were like the Fl Forestry use to do.

I think it was in 2001 or 2002 the state split it up and half of Aucilla is now Flat Rock Wma and it cost $200 plus your license to hunt it. The rest of it is still your license and $25 WMA permit. The last timeI went was in 1999.

OH man, I can tell you some deer stories about that area!:D

Edit:I forgot to mention that I have also hunted Ducks, Turkeys and Deer at Lake Talquin west of Tallahassee.

Bro. Motor, I am in the process of buying a Trail Cam to put in my yard. When I do I'll post the pictures of the Deer in myyard by my bedroom window where they constantly come to feed every night. We have to be very careful at night driving on the driveway. My drive way is 1200ft from the countyline.

everything was taken,

I am an avid deer hunter and though was reared in Ga, I now hunt North FL 75% of the time.

How about you? Any respect? I demanded it the other day.....grilled back strap in the rain and payed no attention. So respect was garnered.

Have been to the HitchingPost while hunting at Stienhatcheejust a mile or so east of Jena Beach! Have also hunted Buckeye Paper Co. across the road from Stienhatchee, but you have to buy a special license in Perry which was $110.

RE: FLORIDA HUNTERS!

As far as FL vs. FSU Im a man and can say good job last year....but this year is a whole new ball game.

I have hunted the St johns river marsh back home near melbourne, as well as three lakes WMA. Since i moved to Tallahassee in 03 for school I hunt the Apalachicola national forest, Joe Budd WMA, ohclockonee WMA and the St marks national wildlife refuge. There are some good woods within in hour drive of this area. I have gotten a few private property invites before, in pasco and polk counties. My roomate owns 90 acres in candler county GA just outside of metter but it seems every year i go everyone gets a deer but me.
Here is a pic of a hog I got in the wakulla unit of st marks national wildlife refuge last year :

Each yr i drop some $$$$ on apps to try and get into Green Swamp West, but this year is my first year in 3 not getting picked. Its my favorite place to hunt in the state. Here is a great buck my dad killed off of it last year, it netted 119"

This is my second year pulling tags for gator hunting, and thats where I have been for the past week. Me and my hunting party pulled 4 tags (8 gators) for Lake Marion in Osceola County. We were fortunate enough to fill all 8 tags - the biggest was an 11 footer that was FAT just shy of 500 pounds.

We do it as a kick off to the hunting season, and the first step to a florida grand slam. Last year was my first year getting the slam in one season...hopefully this year will be the same! Thanks guys!

RE: FLORIDA HUNTERS!

Hey EWT, hunted all those that you mentioned! Liked Joe Budd and Wakulla when it was considered part of Aucilla the best. Use to hunt close to the National WildlifeRefuge markers. The trees that marked the boundaries had a white band painted on them. Went there for years.

OH, by the way, nice porker! Congrat's!

And Chuck7 hasn't seen one in Green Swamp!:D:D:D:D:D My place is 35-40mins from Green Swamp and during the week I would go every day and drive back home. I don't like their camp grounds. I have taken Deer and Hogs fom Green Swamp and Richloom.

New here too. I am pretty new to hunting also. Well, I've been hunting for 20 years...but have only hunted 4 times in those 20 years. I started in college in TX. Only went once my senior year but was bitten by the bug. Then moved back to FL after college and didn't know anyone who hunted. So, I didn't go very often. When I did it was to a place like the Brady Ranch. So, I'm trying to get more involved by going to the forums and am looking at public land for next season, and hopefully many seasons to come. I live in Naples, southwest, and probably will have to take a drive to get to a decent WMA. Any info on what hunting on public land is like would be appreciated. I guess I am a little apprehensive to go because I am so inexperienced and I wouldn't want to get in someone's way or piss someone off because I don't know what I'm doing.

Thanks!! See everyone around the forum.

Hey there,
I live in Tallahassee as well. My brother and I hunt Hickory Mound WMA. It's half-way to Perry on US 98. I've also hunted Aucilla WMA. I'm hoping to do more hunting this year than the previous 5. WOrk and family have kept me out of the woods for the majority of those past seasons, but things are looking good this year. I did some scouting a week ago in Hickory Mound and found some very promising signs....both deer and hog. Hit me up sometime...maybe we can meet and talk shop for a while. PM me cause I usually hang out in the Bowhunting Forum.

Regards,
Axel

Axel,
I went to Hickory Mount WMA last week too and found some hog track on the Opossum Tram unimproved road. However, how could you hunt in that area since I saw water everywhere andIbarely saw anything over 20 yards. Did you find any good treeat all?
Btw, I am new to huntingandhave no experience at all.
