Hey all. I am just getting into hunting, I am 31 now. When I was growing up, dad didn't hunt, and fished seldom, and I'm just now getting into it and I'm EXCITED!!!
Don't know where to start and don't have much money to spend on stuff. Which stinks, cause I'm so eager to get started.
I have a 30-30 single shot rifle and some cammo's and thats about it. Guess that will get me started.
Anyone have any ideas/tips/good websites/freebies anything to help me get started would be GREAT!!!

Welcome to the board..... You have the basics that are needed. I would try to get the best scope I could afford, but other than a place to hunt you have what is needed to hunt. Hunt with the wind in your face.

as timbercruiser said you have the start.get the scope for nowand you have a good 100yard gun.the camo is helpful but not a real nessesity.just hunt the wind, use clean cloths and a good sent eleminonator. I use H.S.Sents sent-a-way spray,I believe in that stuff. I buy it by the Gal. each year befor the season.get yoreself a good comfortable climbing stand and hunt high.
you will learn fast the first year.
just stay on here and ask questions and we will all try and help all we can.
Good Luck.

I'm a 30-30 man myself. In most places it's all ya need and you can get by with out a scope. I'd rather invest in a deer stand. Don't worry about camoflauge clothes yet. Just get up in a tree. Here are things you will need ...
1. Hunting license and proper permits it applicableabout 45.00
Orange vestabout15.00
2nd most imortant things
Flashlight 2.00
insect repellent2.00
Glow in the dark tacks to find your way in the dark 2.00
Good rubber boots 50.00
3rd Deer Stand make one for about 50.00 buy one about 200
Set of camosabout 30.00
Scope From 50 .00 200.00
This of course is my opinion

Get in the woods as much as you can. Dont get upset and frustrated in the begining. You do not need to go out and buy the best stuff on the market for just starting out. This is my opinion I think all of that stuff is overated. Good Luck. Let us know how it goes.

Eastern VA is right!! It is incredible just how much you can learn from spending time in the woods. I have hunted for 15yrs. and normally learn something new each season. As far as getting started goes... you will see more deer if you have some agriculture on your property. (corn, wheat, etc..) I would invest in something to bring deer on your property. It is never too early to start.Late spring early summer is a great time to manage your herd!!!

You are lucky to live in Arkansas if you are just starting out. We have a lot of deer here and some pretty liberal game regulations. My advice is like that of others here, get in the woods. i would also advocate getting an accurate 22 and try hunting squirrels. This will help your skills and be a great way to spend time in the woods. You might also try hanging out at your local sporting goods stores and listen to other hunters and employees to get specific local help. Having said that not all of the advie you will get may be the best so just keep an open mind and use your own intuition to help you sort the earnest and honest advice from the uhhhh.... baloney. Good luck and welcome from another Arkansas hunter.

You don't need much, and recall that our ancestors and forefathers hunted with even less, and they came home with the bacon - they had to. That should be your mentality when you hunt. Not a walk in the woods, but you're there to take game and feed yourself, besides enjoy the hell out of it and getin touch with your natural hunter's DNA. It's always been there, but most people have lost sight and thought of it through the mind-numbing effects of modern "civilization."
All of the trinkets, toys and overstuffed clothing that is churned out by the retail chains is really what THEY want you to buy from them, nothing more.
