I'M A BOWHUNTER FROM OHIO. I USE FOX URINE AS A COVER SCENT SOMETIMES WHEN HUNTING AND I'VE SEEN SEVERAL FOX COME IN FOLLOWING THE TRAIL I'VE LAID DOWN. THIS WINTER I WAS THINKING OF MAYBE TRY MY LUCK TRAPPING. I WOULD LIKE SOME INFO ON WHAT I SHOULD START WITH. AS FAR AS TRAPS ARE THERE ANY THAT ARE BETTER THAN OTHERS? HOW DO I MAKE MY TRAPS SCENT FREE? WHAT'S THE BEST LOCATION TO PLACE TRAPS? SEVERAL PEOPLE HAVE TOLD ME THAT FOX LIKE TO LOOK OVER A OPEN FIELD FROM THE HIGHEST POINT SO THEY'LL NATURALLY LOOK FOR HIGHEST POINT IS THIS TRUE? ANY INFO WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED!

I live in ohio and the best way i can get foxs is by setting leg hold traps in places they ve been running and if you cant find any of those places i some times set big colverts. with a colvert set you might get allot of coon but keep seting it and you might get a fox. (good luck)!!

I would use a 1 1/2 inch coil spring trap with offset jaws, either a bridger or sleepy creek. The most effective set for fox is a simple dirthole set. Get the book, The Dirthole Set and Its Variations by Charles Dobbins. It only cost about $9 and he goes through all of the tools, baits, trap preparation, and sets you need. It is an invaluable resourse for a beginner. I wouldn't boil and wax the traps like he does though. There is a product called speed dip that works great. You mix it with gasoline or lantern fuel and dip the traps in it and hang them in a tree until the petroleum odor is gone and they are ready to go, no waxing needed. If the traps are new run them through the dishwasher, if they are used scrub them with a wire brush and kerosene, then dip them.

dirt sifter
small trowel
fox lure/bait
1 1/2 coils spring trap
18 - 24" of rebar stakes
rubber gloves
toilet paper.
To make a dirt hole set, take and dig a small hole and put the fox lure (not urine) in it. The hole should be at a slight angle. Now place the trap in the ground in front of the hole where the fox would step down to investigate the hole. Once the trap is in place and is steady, put a sheet of toilet paper over the trap and use the sifter to spread dirt over the trap.

I agree with slicendice, but i would dig my hole about 2 ft deep and at a 45 degree angle, then i would put fox bait on a back stop such as a stump (dig the hole close to the backstop) then bed the trap so it is solid and doesnt move under any pressure, if fox feel this they will flip over ur trap and u will never catch one. Another trick that works good is that if u have some white deer hide or sheep wool stick a piece of that down it the hole to make it look like a mouse and keep their attention. Another alternative for the toilet paper is a piece of screen the size of the jaws. Another trick is to have your trap pan in the lowest spot. this is where predators will step. You can also place sticks around the trap to make sure they come form the front instead of the side or back, cuz predators will not step on sticks when the are sneaking up on prey. Then when u get your set how u like it i would brush away all the tracks and spray everywhere you have stepped or touched with fox urine. Use a pair to set the trap (new gloves) and any pair you want to scent and spray urine with.
GOOD LUCK!!!
