Default Results: First Squirrel Hunt

Well, my first official squirrel hunt was Saturday. My buddy and I headed out to some local private land (his aunt's) to take on some squirrels. We were out around 6 a.m., it was under 30 degrees and slightly wind. We made our way into the woods....and didn't see a squirrel for 2 1/2 hours...I assume because it was colder than it has been, and the wind. Finally came upon a squirrel and he took off up a tree....didn't even have time to get a shot off with our .22's, and i think we were stunned to have finally found one after 2 1/2 hours. Well....we finally found one...but couldn't find him in the tree to save our lives....big tree...and tall as all hell. Soo.... we took a seat and waited.....and waited....and waited....(thinking to myself this would have been a good time to have remembered those quarters)....finally i notice a limb that doesn't look right....and take a look through my scope....there he was just perched and waiting. Called my buddy over...and we lined her up.....problem here...i tried to true my scope while I was out there...and didn't do the best job...took a shot and missed......he moved around...and stared down at us...my buddy to a shot and took him out...great shot...with no scope, through the throat and out the cheek. First squirrel down.

We didn't see another one till about 45 min. before 12, and again, my scope was not true enough, nor were the two shots I took with my buddies .22, let's just say he got away....and I was kicking myself.

Couple of lessons learned.

1) True scope before hunting....with target and flat land.
2) A little stool is a great idea, for when the little buggers hide up in the tree
3) skin the squirrel while in the field, much easier
4) wear many more layers of socks

I have to say my buddy and I had a great time....stalking the squirrels. We had a blast walking around in the woods, sighting up those squirrels. I know, we only saw two, but we had a good time, and looking to go again. This time, we're going to find some new land...with maybe a couple more squirrels. Looking forward to going again...Thank you all for your help.

I'd put the pic. on here of our first hunt, but we didn't have a digital camera.

Congrats Boss! You may not have gotten anything, but just being out there is a sucessful hunt to me. You really should have sighted in your scope before you went out there. Next time, try using a shotgun for squirrel. It makes it much easier. I would use a .410 if you can get one and to an extreme maybe a 20 gauge with some light field loads. If you'd like, you can send me the picture through the post, and I can scan it for you and then post it. PM me if you want that to happen. If the squirrel ever runs up a tree like that again, you and your partner should stay on opposite sides of the tree. This way, since squirrels like to run in spirals up the tree, you and your partner can scare it to the others side of the tree, therefore providing one of you with a shot.
