what should i use in my 12 gauge for coyotes?
i've always got coyotes in the back yard, and last night a group of them killed one of my sisters cats (hehe). i dont want them attacking my dog, but my dog loves to be outside. what shot would you recommend for relatively close range coyote shooting for my 12 gauge? it's got a 3 inch chamber. (sometimes they dont die in one shot with a .22, and my shotguns the only other gun in the house...WAITILL NEXT CHRISTMAS!!)
i was thinking slugs or 00 buckshot. I have both. would those work?
of course they would, a .22 usually works.

RE: what should i use in my 12 gauge for coyotes?
thanks, but i have a smoothbore. slugs are accurate up to about 5 yards . after that, i have to point way high to put the slug in the right place. my uncle said 00 buckshot works, but i wanted some more opinions.
i could still hit the coyote with the slug, but im not sure if i'd just shoot its leg off or what...i dont shoot slugs much from my shotgun, so im not entirely familiar with the rate at which they fall. if they were within about 20 yards i could hit them, but outside of that, i'd be better off with my .22 or some buckshot. unless rifled slugs are better. maybe i should try some of them.

get one person to shoot with the .22, you shoot 00 buckshot, and have someone else throw rocks, should work <img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle> LOL. Go with the buckshot, in my opinion.

kos2186,you do what you have to do to take care of that coyote problem but seeing as how your from ny,using 00 buck on coyote is a game law violation.the fines are stiff, the max for coyote is #4 shot.use high brass, magnum or nitro shells in 2 3/4 or 3 inch.at the yardage you said any of these shells will do fine.also keep in mind that the season closes march 31.now that thats out of the way,if you already shot two then chances are the rest got the message and won't be back any time soon.coyotes smarten up very quick.
