Is it true a .17 HMR bullet will mushroom on impact of a rain drop from any brand of ammo?? I have heard such rumors and we like to hear the facts from some .17 HMR owners...

.17 does mushroom fast.. Hornady seems to break up fast, not really mushroom. CCI hollow points have better penatration. Varmint Al has some 17. HMR tests on his website. Most of the results I expected. The only
one that really suprized me was the results of the lead tests he did. You can check it out for youselves. He seems to
have done a very good job with ballistics, grouping and the type of damage the various .17 loads can do.

Well, my funds are limited, so when I sell some more stuff on ebay, I'll be getting myself an NEF handirifle in .223. The .17 hmr is tempting, (NEF makes a very affordable 17 hmr rifle as well) but I really want to get in to coyote hunting, and I want to be able to make shots at a longer range if I need to.

Also, Though I don't reload, I can probably find someone who does who can load some nice .223 rounds for me. Plus, ammo is cheap.

i bought a 223 last winter. but i got it because i wanted to be able to have some range on yotes. i have shot rabbits with it. works good but if ur planing on eating them. get a 17. but with the 223 i buy a box of 40 shells for 13$. but there the winchester jhp(jacketed hallow point) and they work great. but u can even get them cheaper than that. actualy thats one of the more expensive round. u can prob pickup a box for 5 bucks or under. but it sounds like it all depends on what you plan for range on yotes. i dont think i would shoot at a yote longer range with a 17.

.17HMR is only good for small varmints, not coyotes. Its cheap too shoot mind you, i have one and go thriough a box of hornady's a day when i go shooting. I'm getting a tikka laminate stainless in the .223 because i would never go shooting coyotes with the .17HMR. You have to be an excelent shot, besides the .223 is good on things even as small as gophers.
