If you are wanting to hunt squirrels and rabbits then I suggest against the 223 Rem. Too much meat damage for one and you really don't want to be shooting up into the trees with it. For what you listed the 17 HMR would be better and is not that expensive when you figure you are getting 50 rounds compared to 20 in a box of 223.

For all of the above game animals I would suggest the .17 HMR.. If you are just going long distance for coyote and groundhog I would go with the .223 or .22-250

I would say if you are shooting everything within 150 yards the .17HMR performs well. Over that distance the .223 is the way to go. I havent attempted to shoot anything bigger than groundhogs with my .17HMR and for the most part they are 100yards out. I have had people tell me you could kill a coyote with a .17 but I rather use something bigger to get a clean kill.

The .17 is good for everything on your list except the coyotes.

the 17 hmr is a awsome caliber for small game. i wouldnt use it on coyotes unless i was shooting the cci hollow point. heres a site with some bullets compairison between the cci and honrady. look at the size of the holes in the lead balls.
