Going out tomorrow morning

Gavin, I added your photo here. If you want to continue to do it this way, just make a post when you get squirrel, and email me the picture. Then I can edit the post and put the picture in. Nice job.

Yes I believe they are called pine squirrels we also have larger fox squirrels that some people call reds gets a little confusing sometimes

What choke u use for squirrels I tried once with my maverick 88 and it was to spread out and had lots of pellets in the body

Usually the modified choke that came with it. Later in the season I'll switch to a .22, or occasionally a full choke on the Maverick.

Pellets hitting the body are pretty much inevitable when squirrel hunting with a shotgun. The trick is finding shot big enough to pass clean through the squirrel, but not big enough to break bone. #4 lead is what I've settled on. And of course always clean carefully.

Oh I used a 410 last year but changed to a .22 this year cause the price of shotgun shells is so high compared to .22

LONGHUNTER1750 09-24-2015 08:43 AM

I didn't get into the woods until about 8:30 this morning and there wasn't much moving, but i did manage to bring two home.

Looks like you decided to use the Maverick. For 200 bucks I sure can't complain.

Bocajnala 09-27-2015 04:23 AM

Hey folks, been extremely busy. On my work computer, I can't view any of the pictures posted recently... so, hopefully tonight or tomorrow sometime I'll be able to get on at home and get caught up with scores. Keep stacking them up in the mean time.

Got one the hard way, missed another about 20 minutes after the first

Bocajnala 10-02-2015 06:28 AM

Took this little guy out and didn't see anything. This lil man is the reason I haven't had any hunting time, but he had a blast walking through the woods. I've got a daughter due OCT 9th too, so it's about to get busier. But I'll keep updating as much as possible.

LONGHUNTER1750 10-03-2015 11:24 AM

It was kind of windy this morning but brought in three more for team three.

Bocajnala 10-03-2015 11:39 AM

What's some favorite squirrel recipes?
-Jake

LONGHUNTER1750 10-03-2015 12:26 PM

Fried, Dumplin's, Brunswick stew, want to try smoking them.

toytruck 10-03-2015 03:32 PM

I prefer them fried to anything else. Not the best health wise, but its darn good eaten!! Today was the first day of bow season and we had torrential rains an winds. The deer wouldn't be moving much anyway so I fixed up a couple of my fox squirrels above.

Yum, Yum I sure missed eating me a mess of squirrel til today!:happy0001:

Here is how I like squirrel.
Boil them in water with a little apple cider vinegar until tender and falling off the bone, then debone
Or cut up and fry like chicken.
then put in zatarain's cajun jambalaya rice.

It is Yummy.

toytruck 10-05-2015 04:32 AM

I do the same when cooking them then roll in flour an fry. Your rice recipe sounds good, but I can't do spicy anymore...I will look into other rice meals that might work for me though.

Thanks for the idea, never thought of rice an squirrel.

Place your cooked/pulled meat over some Rice a Roni and add gravy and mushrooms.

SoloCamper 10-06-2015 08:45 AM

I like to put squirrels in the pressure cooker for about 45 minutes, collect the meat, shred with kitchen shears, and then use the shredded meat to top a salad. Sometimes I'll add some sliced venison steak and turkey lunch meat and call it a "3 animal salad".

Theloneoutdoorsman 10-06-2015 09:04 AM

I'll have to try some of these methods of cooking. Since the squirrel I shot this year was my first ever I just cooked it plain over an open flame. I don't mind the gamey taste of any meat so far that I've tried.

For me, it's not so much gaminess as it is toughness. Excepting a couple little ones, I haven't enjoyed any squirrel that wasn't cooked in a crock pot or pressure cooker. Then again, I find a lot of chicken breast unpalatable for the same reason.

alleyyooper 10-07-2015 03:00 AM

Reads like a squirrel recipe thread.
My favorite is to leave the squirrels whole wrap them with bacon even stuffing the body cavity with bacon and bake. I think the bacon fat prevents the dryness a lot methods of cooking causes.

But here is a link to some others.
