.223 is the best Coyote caliber around, but if youre in a fairly populated area, A 17 HMR might be the safest bet.

Honestly whether you use a .223 up to 300 ( examples) they all will travel a long ways. Even a .22lr will travel 1.5 miles. I would say just use the rifle you hunt deer with. I hunt coyotes with my .270 for now until I can buy me a .223 or 22-250.

Not nothing wrong with a shot gun with number 4 shot or coyote buster ammo in a populated area.
Even a muzzle loader is acceptable.

I also don't think the 223 is the best coyote round. Many a 22 hornet & jet 22 250, 220 swift, 222 & 222mag 243, 6 mm shooters will say so also.

"Best" is subjective. Most popular is not - 223rem wins that contest hands down.

Slight clarification on your first comment as well - #4 BUCKSHOT is the coyote buster. #4 shot is not (i.e. turkey shot). #4 buckshot is almost twice the diameter as #4 'bird shot'.

I picked a Savage Axis in .223 Remington for recreational shooting but I visit my friend a farmer and we watch for Coyotes. Neighbour raises sheep so we loaded a 53 gr. SST to aid in keeping population in check. They must know I have the rifle because when I have it they hide.

A .22 Magnum would work and be quieter, the .17 WSM or. .17 HMR would also be in that same Catagory as well as a .22 Hornet!

Using a Deer Rifle.....Wow that should wake up all the nearby Neighbors, draw in the Sheriff's Dept and scare off the rest of the Coyotes in the surround area too!

Some of the statements made here are to funny .

Was just reading about deer hunting with a 223 and 22 250 a fella in SC thinks is the best deer round. I also hunt coyotes with a 243 on occasion and I also hunt deer with it. Same with the shot gun I hunt deer with and some times take it after the coyotes.
