Looking at trying some coyote hunting this fall.

Old college buddy and I had gone in the past with no success; guessing we probably made rookie mistakes and had a low coyote density.

Was thinking out of the box and wondered how well it would work to try and setup an electric caller near some heavy cover and use a climber to try and get the drop on them.

Anybody use this technique? Between where I hunt in Ohio and Northern Michigan there is lots of Hardwoods and not many fields.

That is the way I hunt them in Michigan. I set the caller 30 to 50 yards out and off to the side a bit to divert their attention from my location. I have found the dogs here a bit skittish in most of the areas I hunt.

Do you use a shotgun, or high power rifle? Hoping to get my AR scoped and use it on future yote hunts.

I use the same stands for deer hunting and coyote hunting. I have different stands set up for different winds. Our Coyotes are plentiful but very skittish. I've called in a few but not gotten them out of the thickets to get a decent shot.

I use a .308 win sighted in at 200 yards.

I usually set up along Woods and open Fields so I have a combination of Hunting scenarios or if I'm Coyote Hunting in the heavy woods I try to set up at a good view point or I always try and use an existing Ladder Stand or Box Blind or when possible even a nice elevated Shooting House.Since most People around here do a lot of Deer Hunting there's always plenty of stands to use and take advantage of when there isn't I take a light weight ladder stand and set it up or even take a few rungs out of a taller ladder stand and make a shorter stand to at least get off the ground a few feet!

I have used a Climbing Stand a few times....it's just more cumbersome/difficult to use and carry Your gear or Rifle up with You.When we Deer Hunt I usually pack a Mouse Squeaker and a few tried and true mouth calls in case the chance arrives at coaxing in a Coyote or Bobcat comes in if in Season!

Not sure the point of tree stands for coyotes but i'm taking it , it is to see. I could see you making the yotes more skittish to hunt do to noise and smell at a high point. Play the wind and use proper terrain to your setups and make them come to openings or if they don't they don't wind you. Then there is another day to hunt them. If they take wind from you , they will then always use the down wind method for sound... Just my way of thinking...

Adrian,we do a lot of Coyote Hunting from the ground but when ever possible I like to set up high and see further across the different fields we have especially if it has high grasses or crops and You can see further and cover more ground.It doesn't always work out but for the most part We have an advantage over the Coyotes by being up off the ground and scent wise we hunt the wind and try to stay scent-free as possible similar to Deer Hunting,as far as movement we just don't move around a lot same as ground hunting plus not many Predators look up 15-17 feet into tree's.

I hunted a large open Hay Field friday evening by setting up my Caller 50-75 yards away and I used the existing Hay Bails for cover to watch the Field running west and north with woods to the front of me,I had 2 come out just before dark but didn't get a shot,I also set up the same way at our Farm when the CRP Fields are mowed and the Coyotes come out looking for mice,rodents or rabbits to eat...it works and just last week I called out a Bobcat to an open field up to my E-Caller into the food plot we just planted this Spring....the Cats are out of Season right now so it didn't get shot!

I use a .223 but sometimes wish I had a shotgun with me. I would have got one more coyote this year if I would have had the shotgun.

I see a lot of tracks on power lines and pipelines when deer hunting. I would try that if you have them available.

Like a lot of other animals coyotes use the least path of resistance.

Set up at the high point in good cover on those power lines.


Decoys and soft calling helps.
