The .17 HMR is known for it's speed and accuracy.
Practice until you feel confident in hitting a quarter ever time you squeeze the trigger.
Then put the crosshairs right behind his ear.
Body shots will result in them running off to die later (as a rule of thumb).

If you read a few of Capstick's books, or read around from time to time about other stories like the Brooklyn Zoo killing, you'll find loosely documented cases where elephants have been killed by .22lr's. Capstick's "legend" attests that supposedly the "armpit" of an elephant is relatively thin and is easily penetrated, so again, killing even an elephant with a .22lr all comes down to shot placement.

Main thing is to take Your .17 HMR to the Range and get it sighted in good and learn to shoot it proficiently/well,know Your limitations and range and You will do well with it!
Since Your limited to Rimfires only Your choices are pretty slim pickins!
