What small game are you hunting? Do you plan on saving the pelts?

well the proper answer is.......depends. Need to know more about your hunting conditions and the game. Small fast moving critters, heavy brush, etc.......you probably need a shotgun. Slow animals or animals that will sit still for a shot, or maybe you need to make a headshot because you dont want to damage the pelt.......rifle. Yeah im sure youve heard a lot that cancels each other out because either gun could be the right choice depending on the circumstances

When I predator hunt I take both, have the shotgun at the ready and have the .17HMR against the brush.

I'd say if given the opprotunity, both guns wouldnt be a bad idea. Here in NY where most spots are thick brush and forests I use a 12 ga. 3inch mag with #4 buckshot.
