Default What bait to use in the winter

I've been getting into trapping coyotes a little this fall and so far have just been using venison scraps for bait but now that it's below freezing everyday and snowing will they still be able to smell the meat if its frozen. What is the best bait to use when it's below freezing.

Deer scraps work well and most K-9s don't have any problem locating bait even if it is frozen. My all time favorite winter bait is beaver. It seems to be irresistible to all critters. If you're not able to obtain beaver flesh, then I would consider purchasing some commercial lures that has beaver castor as an ingredient. Another option is a Long Distance Call lure containing skunk essence.

Here's a few ideas for coyote call lures.

  1. Fox Hollow "GH-II"
  2. Caven "Gusto"
  3. Carman "Canine Call"
  4. Caven "Violator 7"
  5. Milligan "Steppenwolfe I"
  6. Miranda "High Plains Predator Call"
  7. Caven "Yodel Dog"
  8. June "Songdog Supreme"
  9. O'Gorman "Plenty Coyotes"
  10. Marsyada "#601 Coyote Lure Supeme"

Good list!!

I would add Pro's Choice to the call lure list, just don't get any on yourself.

For a bait I really like Powder River Paste bait in dirt hole sets.

Sure is!....most any meat eater will go to great lengths for a taste of beaver..fresh or "well aged".

Gut piles and cattle afterbirth will make a "wise" critter do some stupid things also.
