Hmmm . . . never hunted them with a gauge and the -06 seems like overkill. well if your going for pelts i would go with the -06 because you probably wont get to close to em. they're sketchy little critters.

To be honest there actually is quite a bit of know how involved in calling predators. Hopefully you have looked over you areas, if you have descent distances to work with use you 06, if thick wooded areas or scrub use your 12ga. Here a few bare basics to get you going. Buy a rabbit or woodpecker in distress call, call loudly into the wind and do you best to make that call sound like the animal is in pain/hurt, wear camo, I wear blue jeans but....do not over call do it in bursts for15-30 seconds then taper them off. Recall every 5 minutes or so. Do not move around while calling, always watch and be aware of one working their way down wind of you to scent you out. After 45 minutes of calling into the wind and no action, relocate. Young ones will come running in so be prepared to shoot and any predator may came come in as well. When I use a 12ga on them I use #4 turkey loads on them with an extra full choke. If you shoot one leave him lay and keep calling as where's theres one.......

Don't move around and call into the wind........

Thats about it in a very bare bones basic crash course to get you going. There really is an art to this type hunting, some guys spend many years getting it right and even then sometimes the yotes win.

Hunt at dawn and dusk

use full camo.

Set-up in cover (in the shade -sun at back).

Be near water with a good view of surrounding area (gain height if you can).

Call softly and infrequently (call differently every time & in every direction).

Remain motionless (bring chair or cushion).

Shoot off a good rest (back pack) or sticks.

I always do well when I hunt near cattle (at least ground squirels).

One shot, one kill (use your 06)

Good luck !!!

Randy is good, but honestly, I like Les Johnson better.
