RE: Lookin for a new yote rifle
yea, i like a nice grain wood stock.......but i do like houge stocks, and good "real" synthetic stocks. i guess i just dont care much for the bottom of the barrel injection molded plastic ones they call synthetic....no one would buy them if they called them what they were(plastic)... but i suppose if the gun is a shooter what does it matter? even the cheapest synthetic stocks still have advantages over the best wood stocks.....

RE: Lookin for a new yote rifle
the savage looks sharp..... never owned a savage..... how do they shoot out of the box?

RE: Lookin for a new yote rifle
I have a Savage special run gun chambered for 243 that is a shooting SOB. The plastic junk stock on it is gettin replaced as soon as my Stockade stock gets here towards the end of March. That is my only complaint on the Savage is the tupperware stock. I should have bought one with a wood stock from the factory.

RE: Lookin for a new yote rifle
Here's my Savage (with the crappy factory stock too :D)
This is a Savage 10FP tactical carbine. It has a heavy 20" bull barrel in .223 and seems to LOVE Black Hills 60gr V-Max with it's fast 1-9" twist. The tactical version of the Accutrigger is the best I've shot, breaks like glass with no creep, no overtravel no anything. I haven't measured the weight but I'd guess 1.5-2lbs tops? I just had it at the range today after I remounted the scope and it shoots like the last picture all day long and from the bi-pod no less! Combined with the ballistics chart I have for this barrel and load out to 500 yards? It's gonna flip some fur. I'm glad it shoots so well without having to drop $600-800 on a VXIII to get the accuracy out of it. Even with the Swift Premier 4.5-14 X44AO scope and factory tupperware stock I don't know if I can physically shoot it better than it does as is? And all for the wallet busting price of $600 total for everything you see 2nd hand from a buddy. ;):D 100 yards off the bi-pod all day long. |
RE: Lookin for a new yote rifle
with groups like that i would be afraid to change anything on that rifle....

ORIGINAL: ReDoT with groups like that i would be afraid to change anything on that rifle.... That is right out of the box and factory ammo. I have a picture here somewhere of a 5 shot 200 yard group that could be completely hidden by a QUARTER using a mid-range 14 power scope. [:-] If you want a shooter that won't break the bank, seriously look at the Savage tacticals. |
RE: Lookin for a new yote rifle
I wouldn't play to much with it. I assume you dropped the trigger down. Beyond that, an aftermarket stock is not going to do much better. Even though the savage stock is a flimbsy piece of trash. It is thick and sturdy where it counts, at the action. If you want to shrink the groups, may try a piece of foam under the barrel directly above the sling stud. Just in case the bipod is able to bend the forearm slightly to contact the barrel. Make sure every time you break it down the screws are tightened back up to the same degree. If you plan to reload neck size only. You should get that little gent to one hole without any more money at all.

ORIGINAL: ReDoT the savage looks sharp..... never owned a savage..... how do they shoot out of the box? ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() I could go on, but you get the point. I have had custom rifles that cost 3 to 4 times as much that do not shoot as good as my out of the box 12FV! I have been working up a load for my buddies sporter weight barrel Savage in .223 and the groups have been just as impressive. For coyotes I have been shooting a 50gr V-Max at around 3500fps, it will shoot a .5" group at 200 yards with that load. I am sighted in at 200 yards which puts me right around 1" high at 100 and is 5.5" low at 300 yards. Very good coyote medicine but it is heavy to pack around. I am looking to do a barrel swap with a sport weight barrel this summer to take a few pounds off....the gun that is. |
