Big Yote Down (my first)

tried the yote thing last season. i did manage to call a few in but they always busted me long before i could get a shot. actually have quite a few in my area so bagging a few has recently been in my mind but again i figured after deer season. this past friday i had the opportunity to sit in a new spot and like it.just before sundown heard something moving to me left and saw a big one.i was there to hunt deer but when i laid my eyes upon this guy icouldn't help but take him. my first yote!! .

Well howler, I don't know where bassman killed that dog, but we have big dogs in Illinois. For every 50lb dog in Illinois, you guys out west have 5 25lb. dogs. Not that there is anything wrong with that[:-]

must be the corn. (news to me) but i've been told yotes will eat anything. meat when it comes along and veggies if available. this guy was around corn all the time (& it shows)

You should have your scales checked. That is not a 60lb yote. Maybe close to 35 to40,and dif not a58. It might be filled with food also from just eating before you shot it,But that is not a true 50+ animal.

ntcbassman 12-09-2008 04:23 AM

RE: Big Yote Down (my first)

not my scale. its the scale of the weigh in station (certified deer check in station) if my yote is 30ish lbs as you say, that station must be weighing in some 400ish lb deer :D.

don't want to make a big deal about this as its a coyote and not like a record deer or fish but i was told on another site by some guys they too thought it was in the 30ish range. i was doubting my own strength cause he felt hefty to me.i purposely brough him to a weigh station so iwould know before i had him skinned. ill enclose one more pic.(blurry pic[&o]) im 200lbs, the yote is right next to me. im pretty certain that 4 of these dogs would weight more than me.

lab, i hit him with my 12 guage about 30 yards from up in my treestand

What a monster. I would say he has to be close to what you say he is. Not very often you see a coyote of that size so definately hang him up on the wall.

These people on here who say it is a 50#+ yote are the ones who think they know it all. I have trapped over 25 yotes this year and over 300 in the last7 or 8years. Foot traps and snares. I have seen 2 yotes that went 50 or a little over. I have seen alot of 35 to 40# yotes. That yote is not a 60#. No way is it. Anyone ever see a 40#+ yote? I am saying those scales are not correct. How many who claims it is a 50+ have everseen a yote at all over 30#? The know it alls on here have I am sure. You got a texas kid on here who never seen a yote over 30# I would guess saying it is a 50#. Your yotes don't get half the size of our yotes here in the east and you know that is a 50#. To the man who shot it,nice yote but some confusion to the actual size of that yote. What state are you in? It has to be eastern I presume for a yote that big.

What state do any of you live in who doesn't have it posted? I am from PA.

Whoa take a breath man! That is a very large coyote and I would say it is close to the weight he says it is. Why would you call hima liar. As for the "I have trapped 25 coyotes this year" big deal man I have a very good friend who is also a fur buyer here in ND that catches that many in a couple days. You say you have trapped 300 in the last 7-8 years well he does that in a year of snaring and never brags about it. To me you sound like a chest pounder. No matter how good you think you are there is always someone better. Oh and I have seen many coyotes 48+ so don't tell me I have never seen any big coyotes.
Good Day

Isay BS onyou seeing alot of 48+#yotes. I am not calling him a liar. I am saying them scales are a liar. What state do you live in? I believe you believe you seen a lot of yotes you thought was 48+ lbs but was only 35lbers. But if you say you seen them on scales I say you are a liar. Again what state are you from.

You still have the yote? Step on your scales and hold the yote and subtract the weight if you still have the yote. It will be within a couple lbs of accuracy.

RE: Big Yote Down (my first)

Wow your something. Sure do like to call people liars don't ya. I think you should go see a Doctor about your little man syndrome. I live in western ND and hunt here and in MT and WY and those MT and WY mountain coyotes get big yes 48+lb big. Not saying every one killed is that big but there are some that do get that big. Yes your eastern coyotes get bigger because of the cross breeding between northern coyotes and eastern timber wolves.

I am sure you get that many a year that big out west. Yep, sure ya do. One more thing, They are crossed between redwolves not timber wolves. How many do you shoot a year out west to get that many big 48+# yotes? You should bevery popular among the magazine publishers for predator hunters and other sorts. LMAO.

There were 3 40#+ coyotes turned in at the Mid-west event last winter. Bunches over 30#'s. Are 30# coyotesrare in your neck of the woods?

The little dogs were all under 20#'s and still had milk dripping from thier chins![8D]

RE: Big Yote Down (my first)

ok guys. sammy i do appreciate your input (really do) as you know yotes. again, this is my first one so im not going to try and pretend i do. as for you making a "liar" comment, i personally didn't take it that way. i know with fishing, people sometimes get over anxious and guestimate weights with "wild optimism" and genrally guesstimate way big.

im taking it you are a serious yote hunter and like trophy bass hunters who are skeptical of 10lb claims. i can respect that. i knew it was a good one. (albeit my first) had him weighed at a deer check in station (im having a hard time the scale could be that far off) although i guess anythign is possible. i have emailed the person who put it on the scale who is also the taxidermist. i asked if the scale itself is certified and to double check if possible. he's a great guy and im sure he'll oblige.

no offense taken at all.

Bassman- Congrats! A very nice yote! Don't let him get to you they get that big and bigger sometimes.

We get a few that size ourselves every year here in orthern WI. Crossbreeds maybe perhaps. I could post a link to a thread where a guy swears that never happens.LOL Some people just love to argue.

Got my eye on bringing down a monster we have running around here. Twice the SOB came in with his pack on my dog during the bear training season. Both times he got run out of the area only to be right back. The first time I got the best look at him. Managed to get in front of the dogs as they came to a draw. COuld have unloaded and reloded to do it again. 2 of my dogs were right on his butt. He was bigger than both of them. The smaller of the 2 weighs 54lbs, and the 2nd weighs 60lbs. That's a big yote!!!!

Keep up your calling them. You will get better over time. They are very smart. The slightest movement and you are busted. If you ever get the chance try running them with a good pack of hounds. It's a blast. We spend most of the winter chasing them around.

Your friend in hunting,

Steve

not a problem guys. i bet sammy is a serious yote hunter. i know some guys who have devoted their lives to catching double digit bass so when someone throws a claim around. "hey i know a guy who caught a 10lber" they want PROOF!! these are NOT bad guys, infact i admire them for having the passion to be out there in good, bad, horrendous conditions for that trophy. they have a number 10lbs which is to them theholy grail of bass fishing and they are not going to let just anyone spout offthey orsomeone they know say "caught a 10lber" without calling them out on it. personally its not thatimportant to me. (10lb bass) although it wouldbe nice or a 60lb yote. ill take this guy (beginners luck no doubt) but on a negative note i have no deer in the freezer yet,and as much as i admire them i willNOT EAT YOTE

no hard feelings at all guys . :)

I agree with the congrats being in order but wanting them this size I do not think so.. They kill alot of deer up here every year and we would surely love to send them some place else.

It is not uncommon to get these coyotes in that range of wieght up here, so yesI think your coyote wieghed in at that. I had one posted up on here last year of yote wieghing in at 78 lbs. I know some wouldn't believe it and it was caught by a friends son trapping. It was believe by the biologists that it was 80 percent wolf. The Eastern coyote is part wolf making them a hybrid killing machine that takes a quite a few deer up here. There has been a couple documented records of them taking down small moose as well as a four point moose. These are not the same as the western counter parts.

Howler 12-09-2008 03:38 PM

These are not the same as the western counter parts.
And one can see this very clearly, not just by size, butby all the color variations that are found east of the Mississippi. Not near the color variation out west.
