I am considering purchasing remingtons 700 SPS for coyote hunting but I'm having trouble deciding on a cartridge. Most of my shots will probably be out there at about200-250 yards or more unless I canget them in closer but where I have been seeing them theyhave been about 200 yards out. I know a .223 has more knock down power but the .22-250 shoots flatter. I would like to sell the fur so I am worried about hide damage also.I guess I just need someone else's opinion. Any help???
I would think the 223 is your only choice here. The 22-250 does not come in the 700SPS. If you want an out of the box tack driver that is cheaper than a been around brand name, choose Howa. 22-250 is the way to go. You don't need a heavy barrel either. The normal barrels shoot just as accurate as the bull barrels. The only reason a bull barrel would be needed for accuracy is if you live where you have lots of prairie dogs and are constantly shooting without a minute or 2 without cool down. For the states that don't have prairie dogs. A reg barrel will shoot just as accurate and kill just the same.

I'm not trying to say your wrong about it not coming in .22-250 but when I first saw the700SPS it was at gander mtn and it was a .22-250. Plus unless I'm wrong this site shows it in .22-250.

Thanks for everyone's advice though, I think I have decided to go withthe .223.

If I might ask, Y the .223 since with that rifle you do have a wide variety of choices in caliber? Just wondering. Also if you haven't decidedwhat scope and your not looking to spend a whole lot might I suggest the one of the Simmons Whitetail Classics that are on sale at midway USA right now there are two. I just put the more expensive 6.5-20x50mm mil-dot reticle one on my coyote/deer/anything smaller than an elk rifle and it is real good. In fact it is the best value in any scope I have ever shot.

I'm really not sure about that yet but Gander MTN sells one with a scope already mounted and boresighted. Not sure if its a good scope or not though cause I forgot to check which scope it was.

I just think it will be sufficient for what I need and I have been told that it is more fur friendly because of the lower velocity. I don't really plan on loading my own rounds right now so I wont be doing the AI conversion or anything like that. I guess if the shots are too far out I will just have to get better at calling em in!!

I love my 223,I have killed them from 3 to 290+ yards with it and usually within 90 yards they like to get close in KY due to the hills and hollows and broken farm and forrest land, you will be able to kill them at 300 yards with it,my ruger loves the black hills 52 grain soft points and they dont explode like the ballistic tips,I like the hornady's for ground hogs, but they usually tear up some fur on coyotes.Good luck and good hunting!!
