Coyotes at night
I've only done it a few times, but how well do yall like coyote hunting at night?? It gives me the willies!!!! I was sitting up on a row of round bales, one is rotted down a lot, so I lay in it and it looks like it is a regular bale...anyway....I called for about 20 min and didn't hear anything, then something snipped my overall cuffs at my ankle, I jumped up and threw on the lights, they were all over around me, I counted 9 and there were a couple I'm not sure if I saw them or not. It got results, but I don't think I'll do it alone any time soon!!!

heres some tips. Only call when there is snow on the ground and a full moon. So you can see em comming. Or maybe on a fullmoon or clear skys when theres not snow i don't know if you can see em commming or not. Get a red lens to put on your spot light. They can't see it or there not suppose to. Bring a buddy, to help watch or hold the spot while you shoot or vise versa. Get out there and shoot some yotes.

i always tell folks, you want to hunt coyotes at night,in the dark,by your self??bring a clean pair of shorts your going to need them, lol.it no dought can be a hair raising experience at times.for me here in ny i never have had good sucsess at night with snow and a full moon.pitch black,no snow,no moon with lights and a shotgun is better.i also like day light hours with the rifle.

Hair raising? try calling at night and having 4 Timberwolves come running. I had a shotgun but can't shoot Timbers. I hightailed it out of there and kept an eye on my backtrail. I probably should have brought a clean pair of shorts with me that night.

I made a rig one time for night hunting yotes with a maglite taped to the bottom of a pump shotgun, just have to cut a block of wood to make the light shine straight, i use 00 or #4 buck and a rabbit as a live decoy, sometimes hunted on a goat farm over the area where we dumped dead goats, also i cut some red plexi glass the same size as the original lens of the maglite and replaced it, works perty good up to about 75 yrds

I got one that is on track with the wolf story. Acutally I have 3....
Once, we called in 2 mountain lions....not one but 2!!!!! OH SH**!!!!!
Once I called in a black bear....OH SH**
and once I called in one mountain lion that didn't run away when we stood up and yelled, screamed and threw rocks at it. It walked closer to us. WE shot at it and finally frightened it off. WE notified fish & game and the warden suggested that something was wrong with that lion. Perhaps that feline desease (forgot what it's called) and/or rabis. In CA, we can no longer legally hunt mountain lions (bummer, lots of them too).
I've called in packs of coyotes, numerous kit foxes and grey foxes.
Bobcats too. I don't like night hunting because i get scared of lions/bears and I can't see the animal when i want to shoot. WE use the red lights and the "buddy system" too, but it's still too difficult.
Favorite time in cold, cloudy (no rain/wind) days.....I seem to get the best results then. Also, snow on ground, I get a lot of cats.

RE: Coyotes at night
We've got some BIG wolves in my area. The funny thing about this night was that it was relatively calm with little breeze but we ( I was with a buddy) could smell the wolves before they got to us. I don't know if anyone else has had this experience before but I would be curious to hear if anyone had. We both noticed a very musky odor and heard twigs snapping and crunches in the snow before we saw the first wolf walk out onto the logging road we were on. Just as I smelled the odor my buddy whispered "Do you smell that?" Were we crazy or what?
BTW I would much rather call in a Timberwolf than a mountain lion. Whew! It would have a hard time catching me though as it would likely slip on the brown stuff running out of my pants legs! LOL

here in my part of ny there are no lions and bears, for if there were i would seriously think twice about night huntin.its bad enough haveing a fox run into ya or a coyote bark at ya when he's 10 feet behind you in the dark, but to hear a lion or bear roaring real close by.talk about putting the fear of god in ya. <img src=icon_smile_shock.gif border=0 align=middle>
