Here it is, middle of January, and people are out in shorts riding bikes. Supposed to be this warm all week long and even the weekend. Not the best weather for coyote hunting.

RE: 08-09 predator score sheet

Hey #40, come east to Illinois this weekend the themometer will be at a hard left this week. The snow is deep too, stuggled to walk a half mile Sunday only to miss a dog at 150yds.

Howler 01-19-2009 04:55 PM

RE: 08-09 predator score sheet

Ain't that the truth #40fan. It was well into the 50's when we called that cat in, but never called a single coyote, although I don't think they were too thick where we were.

What I'd give for some of that white stuff and temps. back in the teens. for highs!

The Outdoorsman 01-20-2009 05:03 AM

RE: 08-09 predator score sheet

Yeah here in Indiana its cold, heck its actually a heat wave this week with temps being in the teens after what we had last week. :D

RE: 08-09 predator score sheet

The weather killed me this weekend too. I covered a good 13/14 counties and managed to get screwed by every weather system in the state somehow. Too cold Friday night, too Windy on Saturday night, snowing too hard on Saturday and then no real good excuse for why we didn't tear them up on Sunday night.

Managed to kill one double late Sunday night, and a single on Monday morning. Covered over 800 mile in 4 days- this is every coyote I called, or even saw for that matter.

The Outdoorsman 01-20-2009 08:26 AM

RE: 08-09 predator score sheet

Thats tough hunting up there in those conditions JRBhunter. At least you were able to score.

Howler 01-20-2009 01:21 PM

RE: 08-09 predator score sheet

The weather is the great equilizer, when it comes to calling predators. It'll make ya or break ya for sure. BUT, there are those that will stick it out and keep on pushing, finally to over come the odds. I think Jrb is one of those kind! Of course, his team is so close to taking the lead now, that the smell of blood is right infront of his nose! Gettin' tight for the lead. Everyone needs to keep pushing. Coming into the toughest calling period of the season, when it may be time to change up on techniques and sounds a little, to fool those predators thathave heard the rabbit blues in every shape and form. The numbers will be harder to come by, and each one may be enough to put your team on top, but sittin' on the couch is not an option.
Keep after guys, and gals., it's coming down to the wire.

RE: 08-09 predator score sheet

Great job there coyote#68!!! If you can knock out another coyote or two it will really help push our team forward in this thing!!! Congradulations on the big female.

Our coyotes are being pressured by multiple callers now and the trappers are running full-force. Numbers are low, coyotes are shy and weather is unstable. There will be "pockets" of good hunting conditions over the next few weeks but they'll be few and far between. I will continue hunting hard, thats about all you can do in these circumstances.

At the moment, scores stand as follows. Tight, but still a tough contest ahead!
Team #1 - 1350
Team#2 - 1785
Team#3 - 850
Team#4 - 1850 <---The team to beat!

PS: We're going until March 15th - correct?

Jrbhunter 01-21-2009 08:18 AM

RE: 08-09 predator score sheet

ilyotehunter, I've called central Illinois before... that particular tri-county area was one of the most "coyote abundant" places I've been. I'd compare it to some regions of the west and southwest, as far as numbers of killable coyotes. Of course everything is regional- and some places even within the definition of "Central Illinois" lack many coyotes... but all-in-all its a great place to hunt. West-Central Indiana is a real hotspot now, one of my partners just texted me moments ago saying he had seen 17 coyote this week and killed 6, wish I had more ground out that way this season!

I charge $450 per day for calling instructions... but you don't have enough money for me to leave a gun at home! LOL! Its rare that a client kill more coyotes than I do in a day, despite having the best opportunity on every stand and me being patient with the shots. The biggest part of killingthe coyotes you callis written right therein a Kenny Rogers song- "you've got to know when to hold em'... know when to fold em'.... know when to walk away, and when to run." Knowing when to shoot is nearly as important as knowing how to shoot in this game. Time management is equally important.

PS: We're going until March 15th - correct?
Nope, it was decided that the last day of Feb. will be the last chance to post kill pics. If you kill in Feb., you better post the pics. by midnight on the last day of Feb. That's the only way to assure that all predators were killed by the last day of the contest.

Unless of course, my team is behind by one or two coyotes, then I will be allowed to post one last pic. in March...................................Hey come on.........I should get something for ram roddin' this deal.......:DAnd don't forget, I got a little something for prizes for the winning team, and also a seperate prize for the individual you brings in the most points, weather on the winning team or otherwise.

TR, you're killing me man! First you back-up the start and take away a few coyotes... now you shorten it and keep me from scoring my last couple days of hunting!?!?! :D

I can handle the shortened contest... but I only have internet access Mon-Fri and I'll be traveling that weekend of the 27/29th on a hunt. The best I can do is text pictures of my coyotes on those days to someone andhope they'llpost them. Will that count?I'll text a picture toyour email address later today justto see if it'll work.

PS: How can the prizes be any better than bragging rights? LOL!

SO, do you want some cheese with that whine....:DI think we'd all agree to allow you to count kills as long as someone has been texted the pics. by the cut off of midnight Feb. 28th. I might even post them for you if you send them to me, of course depending on the final out come![8D]But you do know that there are only 28 days in Feb. don't you. SO, where you'll be hunting on the 29th is beyond me!![8D]

As far as prizes being better than the braggin' rights, not hardly. Especially if it's me who's going to get to do the braggin'!!!:D

Glad to hear it's finally going to cool down for ya Rammer. The hunting should really get good now huh??

Rammer, if I were hellbent on winning- I wouldn't haveforgotten to score my harvest for over2 solid months! LOL! I like a challenge... even if it means handicapping for Howler a little bit. :D

You're right TR, I was looking at the last weekend of the month... but my calander was flipped to MARCH since that's when I had expected the contest to end for some reason. My season only runs thru March 15th. I'll be hunting the 27th and 28th of February- hopefully my text messages will come thru to your email. I'll send you a sexy little picture of myself shortly- let me know if it comes thru! :D

Keep savin'em up, and I'll keep postin' em so you can count how many that you'll need to have saved up.;)
Got out for a half day of callin' to day. Thought I was going to have a partner, but he called me late last night and canceled on me. SO out by myself again, should've called Rammer, as I'm sure he could've come down on a moments notice!
Finally, on my third stand, got one to show. First coyote that came and saw D, short for decoy!! If she would've swung around down wind of the decoy, I would've had to makea big adjust with my rifle to get on her, BUT for what ever reason, she started circling toward the upwind side of the decoy. I'm notan advocate for the use of decoys, I'm still of the mind that a decoy is the last piece of gear that you need to kill coyotes, BUT I do carry D every now and then hoping to get some kind of reaction from the incoming coyotes. Anyways, this coyote was so intrigued by the decoy, that it never had a clue that I was sitting just 50 yards away. Another exit from the 40 gr. berger, BUT not a big exit hole.

Howler 01-23-2009 02:29 PM

RE: 08-09 predator score sheet

Finally on the 6th stand, got another called in, although I tried to blow it. This coyote basically back doored me. I didn't see it until is was leaving at about 40 yards hard to my left. I had to act pretty quick for a shot, and missed. I got up to run to get to where I could see it again, and it decided to go up a big open draw, making for some good running action. I finally connected on my 3rd shot. Not even sure where I hit it, but killed it dead non-the-less.

Good news is that I got the only coyotes that I called in today, the BAD news is that they were the only coyotes that I saw. Had some wind, that probably didn't help none.

Way to go Howler, that wind has been a thorn in my side for the last 2 months here in Illinois. They are calling for 15 to 25 WNW in the morning, so maybe I'll get out later in the day. I have three spots that are new to me, never been called, so I need to wait till the wind lays down, that's the problem with being a weekend warrior in this game.

Bowman, I use handcalls most of the time, cut my teeth on them and still use them most of the time, BUT I do have a Fox Pro that I use every now and then. I can see the advantage to using ecallers, BUT to me, I don't get the same experience/rush/sense of accomplishment when I am using the Fox Pro. The excitement level is much greater with the hand calls. On the first coyote that I shot yesterday, I used the Fox Pro plus hand callsand I placed the ecallernear D. On the 2nd coyote, I was using hand calls only.
MyAR is my go to calling rifle. It wasn't cheap, BUT who ever said money can't buy happiness, never used a custom built AR for a calling rifle!:D
Mostof the coyotes that I shoot don't come easy. I probably walked about 7 miles yesterday, for 2 coyotes.Themain reason for my success is the simple fact that I don't get out of a truck and walk 200 yards and go back to the truck. I walk, and walk, and walk, and glass and walk and walk and glass, etc.. The hardest part of calling coyotes in this country is getting into thier back yard without them seeing or hearing me coming. Most guys simply won't put that much effort into calling and killing coyotes.

Get after'em Pure!!! We got chasers close on our heals and I think they're out for blood!;)

This weekend was the coyote calling contest. Placed second!! Woo Hoo. Bad part is, only three teams joined and the third didn't show up. :D

Here is the what we turned in and both were shot by me.

The should haves, could haves, were...We should have killed at least 6. My partner missed three and I missed one.

Had a little fun though.

Boy were they heavy!
