You know #40fan, if and when I kill one of those sick ugly buggers up here, you'll be the first to get the blame for letting it live long enough to make it this far. Keep killing them, please.....I begging of you!!:D

Despite being on call at work, called my boss last night to get his blessing to go out just for a bit this a.m., I made a run out to a rancher friend of mines place to pick up two that he killed recently. He said I could have them since he wasn't going to kill enough to worry about selling them. SO, since it was about a 35 minute drive, thought it would be nice to at least do a couple or three stands real quick. Told the boss that I would be home before noon. Well, first stand, almost started calling too early. Didn't see #1 coyote until it was about 50 yards and closing. It figured out that it was a set up and starteda brisk departure, but since I knew that it hadn't smelled me, I did several mouth barks and got it stopped for a simple 75 yard standing shot. Did a few quick ki-yi's and back to rabbit distress and about another 5 minutes later, #2 almost back- doored me. It did get a wiff of me, but I was still able to get it barked stopped about 150 yards out, again for a simple standing broadside shot. Drew a blank on the next stand, and then got one to come across a road to me on the third stand with only about 2 minutes of rabbit distress. A simple 50 yard facing me shot, and it was bagged too. Not a bad morning, for being on call for work!:D

Howler 12-27-2008 11:19 AM

RE: 08-09 predator score sheet

Good thing that not much traffic travels these roads. My luck held out and no vehicles came down the road at the wrong time. I'm sure if a vehicle would've happened to come at the worng time, this coyote would've probably stayed on his side of the road, and lived another day. He came from the pine trees in the back ground. For the most part, the coyotes in this country don't lay up in the trees, so it kind of surprised me that he came from there. You can see the telephone poles that are along the road that he crossed.

ilyote, that is a Versa-pod bipod. Bought it off of midwayusa.com. It allows you to tilt left and right, up and down, and even sweep a little left and right.

Goose huntin', with all that venison in the freezer.......seems like a waste of quality time Rammer!;)

That a boy #40fan, keep killin' them mangy sick coyotes. It'll be interesting this weekend to see if I find some of those sick ones as well. I'll be down hunting east of Walsenberg on Friday, north east of Trinidad on Sat. and then east/south eastof the Springs on Sunday.

Come on Rammer, "geese" over Coyotes, are you ok... LOL...

I took a kid out from church on Monday... He had been begging me for a while, so I took him and his dad...

First stand... It couldnt have been 10 seconds in had one trying to slip down wind... I barked and stoped him at about 30 yards... Bang..... MIss..... first time so I let it slide...

Second stand... we called for 15 minutes and nothing... started walking back to the truck... and seen two deer bust out of the hedge row ahead of us, and they started coming right at us... so we set back up real fast, I just had a gut feeling that a coyote spooked them... Sure enough, my gut was right, right behind the deer... where 4 coyotes... they held back about 400 yards... so I started hitting them with some pup distress on my new CH1 howler... that flat lit them up... they came to about 100- 125 yards, and I think they could see the truck... and the shot was just not safe they stood on a little sand dune that stood about 10 feet high, and I had no idea what was on the other side of the hill, so we didnt risk the shot... This was all on their deer hunting ground, so I showed some etiquet and didnt even bring my gun.... It was nice not haveing the heat on me for once... Fun none the less....
Third stand.... dry hole...but we seen about a 180" buck, but get this... his left side was gone, so I guess he was only a 90" buck....LOL... flipping huge though... biggest one that I had ever seen on the hoof...

It was good to have that many responses, with new guys on the first two stands... I guess that extra prayer on Sunday helped...

I had a fairly productive day today. Going to the first set we bumped a coyote with the pickup, then as we were walking into the set we ran across a fresh pair of tracks. As we went over a small hill we saw both coyotes. Got set up and started calling, they were on a slight rise and I think they could see the pickup parked about a 1/2 mile back behind us, so a no go on that stand. Next stand I called in a pair, I told my buddy to take the first dog, and he missed, I managed to get the second one on the run.

We made one more set, then we called it a morning and went back to my place an grabbed the shotguns for some pheasant hunting. After about an hour an half we bagged our birds, went back to my place had a big bowl of Chilli and decided to go make another stand about a mile from my house. Pulled one coyote out of my CRP and I smacked him in the forehead with a 55gr V-Max (also on the run after my buddy missed it).

First coyote of the day:

Way to go Rammer. Looks like ya know how to handle a Ruger Red label??, as well as an AR!! Your Yellow Labs didn't look real excited about sitting around for a picture taking session!!
I hope some of that winter weather comes back down here. 4 days of hunting to do, and hardly a flack of the white stuff to be found. I gotta get some filming done, so might not be much trigger time for me this weekend!![:@]

Howler, I can handle that Ruger Red Label 20 and the AR with the best of 'em ;) My dogs weren't excited to be done hunting, and sitting on the freezing sub zero ice/snow wasn't too appealing to them as well! LOL This morning when we got up it was -17 and the winds were calm, by 10am and our last set it was -2 and blowing about 20mph. During the pheasant hunt pic the wind was blowing a good 20-25mph as well...I almost came to the conclusion that the 55gr VMaxs I have laoded up do more damage to the 'yotes than my 243 shooting 60gr Sierra HPs, as they never exit....

Howler, since you can't be shooting an your filming, I'll come do your shooting for ya! ;);)

i had a friend of mine help me set some traps today and decided to take him on a quick coyote hunt. he has never been. it was kind of a last minute ordeal thats why the camo i was wearing wasonly avest. made a few sets nothing. getting close to the 20 min mark on one caught this little guyhanging out a distance not really wanting to come in. i was playing the coyote and rabbit on the foxpro so maybe he got a little curious. 267 yards with the .204 done deal no kicks or anything. the wind was blowing about 20-25mph left to right so i held a little into the wind. the shot hit himhalf way down hisneck so i compensated alittle much[8D]39gr. blitzking no entrance hole and a half dollar size exit hole.had some mange on the back half.

Got off early yesterday and headed to some BLM that I hadn't hunted in a while. Called one in on the first set and as I was waiting for it to top a small hill when it bolted out of the area. Two seconds later I hear a 4 Wheeler coming down the road. Guy apologized for scaring off the yote.

Drank too much last night and didn't get out as early as I wanted too, but still managed to do a little calling. Only had one show up.

I guess it was just a one dog day all around, as that's all that my buddy got today too. A little too warm around here I guess. We bumped a couple, and only called in 3 all day. First one was smart, swung way out wide to the down wind side, and my partner missed. Held over when he shouldn't have. We took a break this afternoon to practice on a few prairie dogs, and then finally on our last stand this evening, Icalled in a pair and my partner dumped one, but since they just "showed up", the filming wasn't anything to right home about.
The next two days aren't looking too promising in the weather department. Warm and wind are forcast![:@]
Good job on the kills guys.

The AR is a Rock River Lower with the NM 2 stage trigger, ACE Skeleton stock. The upper is a Rock River Standard A4 upper, that I put a Hogue free float tube on, and made the front sight into a low profile gas block, then I added a thread protector so I could eliminate the flash hider. It actually outshoots my Rock River Predator Pursuit upper half. I have a Larue mount on it, and a Nikon Buckmaster 3-9x40, I was going to go with more magnification, but this is pretty much a truck/coyote calling gun so I didn't see any need for more magnification.

Howler - I don't need much notice! haha ;)

Its kinda funny how Karma will bite ya....

I guess this was kind of a good sign... The first stand of the new year went great...( sort of )...
I took the kid from church that I took out on Monday... I really wanted to get him a coyote, and I was still razzing him really hard about missing on Monday, so as we were waiting for the sun to come up on the first stand, I was giving him a verbal lay of the land, and what kind of ground we were going to hunting since we were hunting my ground this time... We got set up, right before light, it got good enough to see and I lit up the first series or Rabbit distress, on my trusty Hedge DC1, the territory was kind of tight so I didnt want to blow anything out... I have had good success following that up with some Pup Distress almost instantly with the CH1... after the first series nothing.... I lit up the DC1 again, and I caught a gray flash trying to make it across the cornfeild.... At first glance I thought Gray Fox, then it got closer.... Coyote, small but killable for sure.... It was on a dead sprint towards us... it got to a point were it looked like it was going to break for the tall grass off to my left and behind us... 30 yards and closing of to my left... I gave it a little lip sqeak, and it made a be line right for us... "Remember I was razzing the kid, for missing on monday...." it got to about 15 yards, I barked, and it didnt stop... Now, its probabley Ten feet, and the crunching of the Corn Stalks is ringing in my ear... I yelled "hey" to stop him... He hit the brakes I pulled up and nothing but fur in the scope..." bang, miss, he spun and is on the exit bang, miss, bang, miss, bang miss........ Nic, walked over and said, what the heck just happened... I litterally was shaking like I had just been shot at myself.... I said I dont know....

Its been a long time since I had been rattled like that..... Thats Predator Hunting at its best.... It was just a little pup female, and she flat out rattled my cage...

Stand two, after I put some fresh pantys on....LOL... Called and thought nothing... We got in the truck and headed to stand three, and we seen a coyote that had back doored us, and was trying to make it out of the county before we cut him off with the truck and he sped off the other direction...

Stand Three.... Nothing... I think that the water came up and flooded out their bedding areas...

None the less... Nothing dead, but probabley one of the most memorable mornings in a while...

That'a boy #40fan, keep it up.
An 'ol lever action rifle is up to the task.Who says a guy needs fast little bullets to hunt coyotes. Good job yodeldog!!

That's what keeps us coming back for more Pure!!Myheart rate increasesjust by blowing on a call. SO you can just imagine what my body goes through when something actually comes![8D]

A couple of bulletins!!!!!!!! Jrbhunter has been found. Seems he's been out killin' too many critters and hasn't found the time to post any pics. Word is he's got a few kills that will be posted soon. Might be a shake up in the team standings. 2nd bulletin, I got some trigger time this last weekend, and will be posting a few pics. of my own when I get home tonight. :)

RE: 08-09 predator score sheet

post'em up that lever action would be hard to dog hunt with all the time. The damn safety on those guns sucks, had a standing shot at 50 yrds. and the gun said "click"..... the second shot was running at 55 or 60yrds quartering away, he did'nt take it very well. That 30-30 is three times as heavey as the 204.

Hey Mike , nothing like haveing them in your lap to get the heart going ah.

I had 4 days of almost nothing but callin' coyotes. We killed 11, but i only got to pull the trigger on five of'em, and one of those won't count, since it wasn't called. We should've had at least 2 more, one of which got away because my friend forgot to load his rifle, and discovered the empty chamber when he hada coyote standing 30 yards directly infront of the gun barrel. He will catch flack for that for years to come.
1st stand on Sat. morning, we called in two. One came in about 2 minutes into the stand and my friend got it, and thena couple minutes later, #2 came charging in and I got it.

Howler 01-05-2009 06:45 PM

RE: 08-09 predator score sheet

It got pretty warm, but on stand at about 3 pm, we hadn't been calling for 30 seconds when my friend whispered "he's right here, don't move." Well, before he got out the don't move part, I had already swiveled my head around. The coyote was already standing 50 yards from us, infront of my friend. He slowly lowered his head to put the cross hairs in the coyote, and soon found out that he hadn't chmbered a round. About now, the coyote starts to walk toward us, and my friend begins to slowly chmber a round. About the time that thebolt was going closed, the coyote made us and flipped ends, and one shot got fired, only to kill a cactus. We kept calling, and about 10 minutes later, #2 showed up, and came right infront of me. The shot was about 40 yards, and I gota rare pass through with my 35 gr. berger, but the exit wasn't bad.

Howler 01-05-2009 06:48 PM

RE: 08-09 predator score sheet

On the last stand of the day, it wasn't lookin' good. At about 12 minutes, about ready to throw in the towel and head for the house, I spotted one to my left that was swingin' was wide of us, headin' down wind. Got'em bark stopped and dropped him at approx. 250 yards.Big 'ol male.

Howler 01-05-2009 07:00 PM

RE: 08-09 predator score sheet

On Sat., we were still in real good coyote country, but we only called one coyote all day. She ended up infront of both of us, and I offered the shot to my "host", but he told me to go ahead. About 100 yard shot, but again, I had a complete pass through, and this time, the exit was not fur friendly. It was aggrevating, after doing one stand, we spotted 6 coyotes out inan open pasture flat, and we had no way of getting close enough to call them. We watched them for about an hour, while we ate lunch, hopinf theycome our way, but no such luck.

Nice work there Howler!

I had an aggravating stand the other day, called in 5 coyotes, never got a shot....Darn things came in from a direction they've never come for on top of a big hill, and they could see my pickup parked a 1/2 mile away, closest any of them came was about 300 yards, and I didn't ever take a shot....I figured I'd come back in a few days and have the pickup parked in a better spot this time.

Sorry I’ve missed out on several weeks of this contest. It looks like a lot of guys are killing stuff this year- and the scores are higher than ever before! My team of Midwesterners (IL/KY/IN) are in a hole for sure!

I switched computers a while back and didn’t save this websites URL into my “favorites” list but I’ve got it now! Let’s see if we can give Howler a run for his money! Here are some of the critters I’ve called and killed in the last week or so.

Here’s what I got for Christmas, a pain to unwrap but a banner day for an Indiana hunter. I was flatout tired of dragging coyotes after 23 hours without sleep!

A real long poke with the 25WSSM on another hunt.

Here are a few Gray Fox from South Texas. Not sure how many predatorswe ended up actually killing that week… but here are some pictures from New Years.

67 Yards witha 10 gauge...

Not a bad night. Some of the fox were already taken out of thetruck at this pointbecause they were taxidermy material.

Lastly, some of the coon Howler added to this years contest. I’ve called a ****load of coon this year… killed a few but we usually pass them up when we’re calling coyote, fox or cats. Only did one all-night coon calling mission this season. Fur isn’t worth much this year: but I’ve put a few on stretchers anyway.

I’ll score onlythe portion of those animals that I called and killed.
8 Coyote
11 Fox
26 Coon

=1,080 Points in a week. Move over Howler.

And... here........ comes....................Rusty........I mean Jrb..................OK, so I can see that next years rules will have to be changed. Those little kit/swift fox are so dumb/easy to call, that they should be worth the same as a raccoon, don't ya think Jrb?;)

The race for the lead has tightened. It's anybodys game. Nice stack of fur Jrb.

Hope the move goes smooth for ya Mike. Hope ya get a chance to call some of these western coyotes before the end of season.

Ya know Rammer, not getting a shot at 5 is better than an empty clip with nothing to show for it, don't ask me how I know[8D]

Jrbhunter 01-06-2009 07:42 AM

RE: 08-09 predator score sheet

I won't argue that the SouthWest Greys are easier to call...wouldn't be surprised if I couldoutkill Howler5:1 on coyotes in his turf either!:DI'd almost forgotten what it's like to hunt in a target rich environment with virgin eared predators (Like Howler's backyard!).LOL! What you see in the pics isprobably half of what we've shot and carried to the truck.... and we passed up or missed as many more.

I'm fresh out of vacation days so the rest of my predators will probably come from Indiana this winter. I'd like to get back over to some ground I have in Illinois next month, called 17 coyotes there in one day once, just not sure my schedule will allow that. Next season I expect to visit regions of Texas and New Mexico that hold high volumes ofthose dumb virgin coyotes. Thistime I was specifically targeting cats... with no luck... but I'll go for a body count next time just to even it up with Howler and his handpicked Ateam. [8D]

It ain't over yet.

Howler 01-06-2009 07:52 AM

RE: 08-09 predator score sheet

I'm shake'n in my boots Jrb!! Bring it on!!;)Thing is, out in my backyard, I don't have a road every mile, so a man that wants to kill numbers actually has to walk more than a 1/4 mile from a road. Not uncommon to walk several miles a day, and I'm not convinced that you're man enough to handle that part, let alone, out produce numbers close to 5:1!!:D;)
