Nice shooting PurePredator.

I have only three empty shotgun shells for my calling yesterday. Had one into 30 yards and have been trying to kill one with the shotgun and I thought I had this all but tied up. First shot missed low, but barely knicked its front feet. On his way out of Dodge, I put the second shot into its butt. Did the spin and bite dance. Went to pull the trigger on the third shot while he was dancing and nothing!! Darn semi-auto shotty failed to feed the third round. When I figured out what was going on the coyote was already on the move. Shoved the third round into the chamber and fired a hail mary. Finally decided to get onto the rifle and was about to pull the trigger when I noticed a house in the background. I decided to let this one go.

Saftey is key.. I have never seen a coyote made of gold... Even then it would be hard to put anyones life at risk for it...

Good job Mike. Those coyotes can take some punishment, that's for sure. About the only time I pack my shotgun is when we're in a calling contest. But then there are two of us, and my partner will have a rifle at the ready.

RE: 08-09 predator score sheet

here is how it fell out...

The last time I hunted this stand I had a double response and hit one, but couldnt find it. So I went in thinking that it might be a touchy spot but with the wind the way it was, it was my only option before work...

On the way in I seen some fresh tracks, what I could figure was 2 or 3 they walked right in step with each other so it was hard to tell, the only thing they where heading North and I was hoping for a Southern response... so I was getting more optimistic as I walked in... I sat on a small knoll that over looks some crp strips and 3 bean feilds, with a overgrown section of just thick stuff at the southern end of this feild...

I got set up, put the decoy out, and started on my first series, I wasnt through when I caught a coyote slipping in from the north... Almost in my scent cone. I stopped him at 25 yds. My rifle is zeroed for 200yds, so not thinking I put it on his chest and I split his head like a canoe, he started flopping I had no Idea what I just did so I shot him again... He is the one in the middle, not a pretty picture....

As I turned south, Coyote #2 made his entrance... I let him get to 150 he stopped and looked at the decoy.. Bang, miss, then I took one of those cool running shots where they just ball up... and roll... then he got up to do the squeal and bite dance... so I hit him again...

I'm sitting on the hill screaming that's how you do it, then coyote 3 & 4 show up... #3 got to with in 175 and sat down... so I hit him... dropped him like a rock... #4 seen the carnage laying everywhere and got the heck out of there...

I actually had to put the truck in 4wheel drive and drive back there cause I wasnt going to carry that many carcasses back to the truck... call me lazy...

The funny thing is I had enough time to make one more stand on the way home... I only had the shotgun... to make a long story short, I got one with in 15yds but he had to clear a tree, my brother called on my cell phone and his ring tone is "Big Pimpin" some of you may be familiar with this, most of you wont admit it..." and I only have 3 empty shot shells to show for it...

It was a good day to say the least... we had about a inch of snow.. everything was right... Mars and Jupiter... in alinment...

Thats my story.....

Well, fact of the matter is that this one coyote simply ran into a bullet. I don't when, how, or why but my scope got knocked off some time or other it seems. First stand this morning, I bump one as I was walking in so I just turned around and went back to the truck. Headed to another spot and I see one a long the road, on the wrong side, but figure I can get set up close enough to call it in on the right side. SO, long story short, I get set up and start calling, and here comes a coyote from the other direction. I was able to get my sticks and rifle turned toward it and thought I would be steady enough to make the shot, but missed, only about 150 yards. Didn't see bullet impact do to the tall grass, but the coyote reacted as if I shot right over it. SO I blamed myself for the miss. Then next to last stand of the day, I call this coyote in and it gets my scent before I can get a standing shot and it apparently simply ran into a bullet, because on the very next stand, I have two coming, one comes way faster than the other, and I miss another standing shot, only about 100 yards this time, and this time I see bullet impact over its back. Don't know how, but seems my rifle is shooting way high all of a sudden. I'll put it on paper before any calling tomorrow. Should've killed three today, but just one was not so lucky.

This is a big old male that looks as if he had a broken hind leg at some point. Had a big 'ol knot that leads me to believe it was broke at one point.

Got this morning and did three stands, called in a double on one and a single on another. Just got the two. Used no distress sounds at all. I've got a sound that I call "excited chase yips" that I use and have called several coyotes by using it alone. I've only witnessed coyotes chasing jacks twice that were "yipping" while hot after the rabbit, and it seems to work well to bring other coyotes to the scene. Try it some time, for something different.

Third double of my life. I believe that they were in the dark broken up tree branches just behind them. They showed up faster than I could sit down and stick the caller in my mouth.

I went back to the same exact spot that I was at last weekend when I tried to shotgun a coyote. If this isn't the same one as before, I'll quit this competition.

This one would not come in at all. Hung at at the 400 yard mark and just wondered around. Finally got tired and let one fly. Hit the mark.

I don't know if any of you saw the post I made in the Trail Camera section. A friend and I put out a road kill deer a while back on his property. Had some good pictures of coyotes eating on it then finally hauling it off. I made some time to get out there and this big yote snuck in. I thought is was close to or as big as the last yote, so I weighed it while I was there. Came in at 30 lbs even. Had my friend take some pictures of his teeth so I could post a picture of them. As soon as I get those, I'll put them up.

Nothing going on at work today, so I decided to call it one and took off early. Went out to the friends house where I shot the 30 lb yote at this last weekend and made a call from the same spot. As close as the last one came in, I was sure that taking the shotgun would pay off this time. And it did! Even though I thought I hadn't hit it good enough and it ran a 100 yards or so, it did go down.

First shotgun yote for me.

Finally a purty red to break up the "western" coyote monotny!! Nice one bhw!!!

#40fan, I assume you must be hunting near some houses with a safety issue?? Is that why you're breakin' out the scatter gun?? By the way, I sold my coyotes last evening, got $10. ea. Don't know if there's any fur buyers down your way or not. BUT that one looks worthy of sellin'..

Good shooting BHW.

Howler, it is near other houses, but the direction I am shooting is away from them towards the river and nothing close behind. I have just wanted to shoot a coyote with a shotty for a while and I have had many chances before but never connected good enough to put one down.

RE: 08-09 predator score sheet

I finally got out last nite, and the night was perfect. It was about 12 degrees when I headed out at 7pm, and when I quit at 2:30AM it was 4 degrees. The wind was about 2-3mph out of the north, bright full moon, and great snow cover. I end up calling in 9 coyotes, and got5 shots and 4 kills. My buddy had a real rough night, and didn't draw any fur. The pictures didn't turn out very good, darn camera might have been frozen.

First one of the night, shot at about 65 yards after about 4 seconds on the call.

#2 and #3 were a double for me. First one I shot at 30 yards charging hard at me, wish I would have been packing my shotgun. The 2nd (4 all together), took off and I finally stopped him at about 300 yards and drilled him. Buddy missed the other 2.

#4 had a good story with him. We walked in about a 1/2 mile to a spot with cedar trees, and spotted a dog laying on the sidehill in a soybean field. After glassing him for a while we couldn't figure out what he was doing, so I started in real soft on the Long Range Tweety, he finally started coming our way but looked funny. At around 100 yards I told my buddy to take the shot when he stopped, he missed him and he took off high tailing it and I finally caught up to him on the 2nd shot. He looked funny because he was carrying his pheasant to his "easy" cottontail meal!

So it was a good night for me, finally going to be able to start adding up some coyote numbers now that I'm getting caught up with work.

ah oohhh, bodabing bodaboom, Rammer has come to play this winter!! Woohoo, and what a start. Good looking coyotes too. Way to go Rammer!!
I went out early this a.m. with two buddys, we should've stayed in bed 'cause the wind kick our bottoms. Bumped one coyote while walking in on the first stand and that was the only coyote that we even saw. Got home by 9:30. My friends both had to go to work anyways.
I hung out at the house and was out cutting and splittin' some more fire wood this afternoon when it hit me that the wind had died down. So at 1 p.m. I headed back out alone. First stand I called in 2, one was swinging way down wind, and a second came in good. Got the big male. Didn't get a shot at the far coyote. Next stand, I spotted a coyote as I was walking in, so I had to back up and approach from a different direction. Had 3 coming real nice, they were comin' slow and stickin' together. I was seein' a triple flash through my mind. About the time things were going to get real juicy, a 4th coyote that had come from the other direction, came running through the three I had been watching, the #4 coyote had already gotten wind of the set up, and was buggin' out, which made the other three get all jittery, which made me get all jittery, but I dumped the first one standin', rolled up a 2nd, missed the 3rd and then never got the 2nd coyote recovered. Spent about an hour trying to find it. Aggravating!! Next two stands drew blanks!! Oh well, two more in the freezer.
