[blockquote]I went Coyote hunting for the first time today. I'm sure we made a ton of mistakes. The first of which was not having a clear plan before this morning. When we figured out where we were going to hunt;we headed out and scoped out the area. We saw a yote walking a frozen pond. When we stopped to glass at him, he bolted. He must have been shot at from a car in the past. We never saw another coyote ,but we had a blast anyway. I can't imagine how much fun it will be when I learn more about it.

To me there is no other hunting that compares, you can hunt any other animal and probably be more successful at it,but when you call in one and he is in your lap before you can point your gun you will then be hooked for life, thinking about is the wind good today for a certain spot or I wonder if I can call in one there we just hunted that spot 3 days ago,you will start having these thought's and they will continue. The more you score the more you want to hunt it's like greed or something, the biggest thing is you will meet a lot of farmers that will be glad to let you hunt them, and this sometimes leads to other hunting oppritunity's.And about whether that coyote had been shot at from a vehicle,he could have or not, these animal are always paranoid like that if you drive in to close to where you hunt, you will have the same luck sitting in your truck listening to the radio as you would hunting NONE,they are very wary and illusive creatures so be very careful in how you try to sneak in on them,no noises from doors, gates, fences,no whispering or talking and dont walk out in the open a lot, they could be in the woods watching you and leaving out the other side, you can sneak up on ten deer easier than one coyote where I hunt, you may see one and be able to sneak on it with good cover it's possible, hills help alot,by staying low on them.Try these tip's and keep on hunting,it's fun and very exciting.CALL'EM IN CLOSE AND KILL'EM ALL!!! BEST OF LUCK FROM COYOTE#68

I"m sure you will do that again to a dog. The biggest thing I try to pay attention to is scent. With cover scents you can fool a deer, and make them think you are 400yds. away when your 40. But you will never fool a coyote.

[/align]I am reading as much as I can about coyote. One thing I haven't found yet is patterns. Can you pattern a coyote? If I see one in an area, will I see it there again in the near future? If we see that one again ,I have a plan to pull over to the other side of the road and slip down the hill a little. { to get a legal distance form the road} I should be able to get within 300yds doing this. We were looking down at him, so we should be able to park without him seeing us.

Well see thats a hard thing to say. can coyotes be patterned ? Yes, but then you put presure on them and you don"t know what they may do. Expect the un-expected, and know that coyotes are always going to eat, and they have to hunt to do that. So thry will move alot and coveralot of ground in the prosess. A young dog can be fooled somewhat, the 4,5 and6 year old dog may get the best of all but a few hunters,,,, the lucky ones possiblly.

hey standsleeper, coyotes are patternable sometimes, like yodeldog3 said they travel a lot,but they have a definite territory, marked with boundaries by the alpha male and female, they travel these boundaries regularly looking for intruders scent or sight, and they hunt in the same general area's a lot,but patterning on a time might be difficult, they travel a lot and hunt in low light hours so if you live in a state that you can hunt at night, you might give that a try,we cant in KY.But low light times of the day are a good time to catch one moving. You should try to locate them at dark in the evening, this will get you close to where they hang out at,but if they see you to much you will see them in that area a lot less,I invaded a den sight several years ago as a beginner and would try calling near or just sitting in the woods waiting for them to come out, they will move on you quickly and go a long distance from that den to den back up,their territory can be several hundred acres or several miles wide,so depending on their exact location they might be able to hear your calls,so hunting a lot of set will increase your odds,it's kind of like playing the numbers you play enough and you will win sooner or later, and it's a very exciting game!!

standsleeper, absolutlly, You should probebly get some hand calls. I like the premos calls myself, I wish the (tallyho) call was the first hand call I got. I really like this call, It dosent make real loud howels, but a real nice tones. Howels, kiyi, barks, and you can even do deer and rabitt distress very well. thats what I would get. I drive truck for a living, and I got another one to have in the truck just to mess withcoyotes I see during the day. I"ve learned alot just messin with them. But there is a million calls to make coyote sounds. and they all will work well once you learn how to blow them..
