Default calling?

I just bought a Johnny Stewart electronic caller, and im new to the coyote-hunting sport. I was wondering if i should stick with it or have a mouth caller on the side with me?

I would defiantly carry a mouth call also. A moth call is more versatile, plus if you need to coax one that extra 50-100 yards, an e-caller isn't usually the way to do it. I really like having one of the squeezable mouse squeakers with me also. They are only a couple of dollars, and you can either Velcro it, or hold it against the forearm of you gun for those final few seconds of coaxing. One more thing to add is that not all animals respond to the same sounds. I have seen a coyote hunting the far edge of a field and blown a little Johnny Stewart pc-1 cottontail without even stopping his stride, then switching strait to one of my homemade cottontail calls (or vice versa) and watched them come in on a string. If what you have isn’t working it’s nice to have a back up ready.

Have you tried the Primos "still" cottontail distress call? Just curious how well those work.

I personally haven't tried that Primos call. I'm sure if you practiced with it a little, it would do the job. The key to any mouth blown call is practice, practice, practice. Then when you do take it into the field, you will be confidant in your ability to make it happen. Believe me that goes along way. If you think you truly have what it takes, you will be more willing to put forward the effort.

E-calls are great but I always make sure I have two or three hand calls with me at all times. Doesn't hurt to have the option of both.
