What will a 270 do to a yote?

A dead coyote is a dead coyote. But if you want to sell the fur, have it mounted, or something like that, then yes, it is over kill. In my opinion, the .223 is the most suited for coyotes. I personnaly shoot the 22-250, and from what I have experienced with it and from having several friends with the .223, I would opt for the .223.

I sold my .243 and replaced it with a .223 just for this purpose of not tearing one up. I am a mammal taxidermist and have to deal with shot critters on almost a daily basis for the last 19 years. One thing to always keep in mind, SHOT PLACEMENT, as even a .223 to the head can ruin one. Just found that out a couple weeks back. I wouldn't rule out .22-250 as this is also good coyote gun with a bit more reach. I bought about 10 coyotes this year that were all shot with this gun and out of a dozen, I only turned 2 away that aren't mounters. Best place to shoot a coyote, or any animal for mounting is just behind the shoulder where any larger hole is easily repaired.
