RE: Coyote gun and ammo
If you are just shooting them to be shooting them, hell yes a slug will work.If you are shooting them for the fur then it will still work but you will need some needles and alot of thread. If you want a close in rifle and you are keeping the fur I would use a .22wmr,at longer ranges (75 yards +)any of the .22 center fires will work.If you have done much skinning a head shot coyote is not fun to skin.Well any head shot fur bearer is hard to skin with its head bones broken.Being humane is the key,if we are going to kill them aleast make it quick.

New to this forum. I use .222 with 52gr. holllow points or an 870 with dead coyote T's (good to 50yds). .222 never cam out at 75yds). .22-250 w/ 55gr. V-Max for long range.

those dead coyote loads are great but I cant always get them so I use 3 1/2" kent fast steel or fiocchi speed steel #2's or BB steel shot loads they have light payloads with some super speed the kent loads push 1 3/8 oz at 1460 fps and the fiocchis push a 1 1/4 oz at 1550 fps. I prefer steel over lead because it doesnt deform and penetrates deeper than lead shot also the 2's or bb's leave nice little holes that usually dont need patching if you keep the hides.
When I yote hunt I prefer to have myself and second person one shooter and one caller. The shooter will have a rifle and the caller gets the shotgun. I would seriously refrain from using a 22 rimfire if you do use a 22 mag at the least and keep your shots short. I use a .223 it with a good bullet like a V-max the yotes dont go far if not drop in their tracks.
I used to use a 6mm but that gun is gone.. long story I posted about a while back. but the 6mm was a little tomuch gun if ya keep hides, Id use a medium size game bullet like the sierra 85 grain gameking the light varmint bullets would leave too big of an exit hole. but the medium game bullets wouldnt expand like a varmint bullet usually leaving an exit hole not much bigger than a grape.

HighDesert, I also had trouble finding dead coyote untill Cabelas and Bass Pro opened here. As for steel shot, the top fur producer in our club recomended not using it as it has a tendancy to pull the fur through the hide where hit and you have to dig it out. My biggest problum is finding a bullit and load for my .22-250 that will not make so big an exit hole that I have to sew it up.

My favorite gun for called coyotes is my Savage model 24F over/under in .22 Hornet and 20 gauge 3 inch. I use #3 or #4 buckshot and it flops them well at over 40 yards. The gun is scoped and luckilyboth barrels shoot to the same point of aim.

it aint hard when u know how to shoot

I highly doubt that.
In my opinion the ideal coyote setup would be a .223

i will prbly just use my .22 mossberg, i can drop em at 75 yard

DO NOT GO WITH BUCKSHOT! buckshot will shorten your range and ruin ur fur! a slug will do a heck of a lot better than buckshot. slugs go faster, hit harder, and they have light shootings slugs so it doesnt do much damage. if u have a good slug setup u can kill coyotes out to 300 yards because a slug is a biga** bullet and goes about 1600fps out the barrel. if u r using a smoothbore go w/ FEDERAL'S TRUBALL RIFLED SLUG. i am shooting them out of a full choke gun and still getting good performance. thoes things are crazy good. if u r shooting rifled DO NOT GO W/ REMINGTONS BUCKHAMMER. it will blow ur coyote in 2 out to 135 yards and feels like a .340 WEATHERBY w/ a recoil pad on. and w/o it feels more like a .416 or worse! i would go w/ remington copper plated slugs for that. ALSO I HAVE KILLED A COYOTE AT 81.7 yards w/ a .22LR 60gr bullet and have had 2 people w/ me witness it. so that shows how much some of u r WRONG!
