Alot of guys use the .22 mag and .17HMR.

Get an E-caller or Mouth calls that can simulate a coon fight, coons love a fight. But be carefull if you use mouth calls because coons go to the source of the fighting sound!!

If you can shoot halfway straight, i would suggest a single shot .22 loaded with shorts, and take head shots. Take some .22 longs (non-hollow points) along in the event that you can't get a head shot. Or, a pistol will work good too if you know how to use it. The last coon hunt that I went on, my friends had a .22 rifle, but I ended up shooting both the coons we got with my .22 ruger semi-auto pistol.

A 223 is WAY too much gun, especially if you plan to sell the fur.

Welcome to the sport. If you are just starting out I would recommend getting a WICK OUTDOOR WORKS catolog, I believe he is online too. Purchase a pair of Frogleg boots. Our gun of choice is a Ruger 10/22 LR...shorts/cb capsif you are near houses. A good light is worth more than any coon squawler even though it won't hurt to carry a call. The squawlers don't work all the time. Tracking colars are a must now a days. Good luck.

Do you have a dog? If so how old? Was it ever trained before? Ur basics so far is a .22, coon light, dog, tracking equipment. Buy walk with wick for better advice and go to www.coondawgs.com

if you buy a pup teach it obiendiance first and let it be a pup. then once it gets 8-10 months try a drag with a dead coon or catch a coon in a cage trap to see how the pup reacts. Do only a couple drags. If your dog does good the kennel it up for 3 nights. Only do it at night because then the dog wont sight tree. then try a cage coon but dont over do it. take it out at night also by itself and with other GOOD dogs. Depending on how far you are talk to LCK or Chet in www.coondawgs.com in training forum
