What time of the year are coyotes most likely to respond and howl? What months are best?

Usually they are more vocal in late fall and mid to late spring around here. Im not sure if it just goes by where you live but in Ohio thats the way it is.

Everybody take it easy as we are all here to learn from one another, Browning corrected me on a subject the other day and he was exactly right. I am always open to constructive critism as long as it is constructive and I can learn from it. As far as being vocal it is my understanding that during the mating season { Byron South Seminar} that this is the time of year that they do howl more than usual to locate mates.Early on into mating season you can especially call in the males to a female invitation howl. Just what I have been told by others with alot more experience than me. May God bless Byron and his family in this time of need and pray for his Daughter Raegon and also for Tripod and family.

I think we were typing at the same time ,I just hate to see fellow hunters spat back and forth as we need to stick together and help one another and I know that unfotunatly there is always someone who never thinks they can be wrong about anything and does not want to listen, I try to just let it go and go on to someone who will.

right, I am not spatting but this guy asked me If I hunted for 3 days and then gives bogus info and calls people out before they themselves know the real deal. I don't mind helping and being helped but before people run their mouths (or fingers) they need to think logicaly about what they are going to say.

This is what I read on Predator Masters forum that Him and His wife were getting ready to hunt a new place and they were both out of the truck loading there rifles and her gun discharged and hit him in the thigh area and severing his femur artery. Very lucky man to be alive. If you go to the forums they are having alot of auctions and sales of various kinds to help both family's with all the medical bills that they are getting.

Good grief Jake, do some reading, if ya can!!
Coyotes are territorial! They leave marking posts to mark their territory and they howl to announce where they are with-in thier territory. During mating season, they howl to locate a mate, as was said. This is why using the howling sounds during mating season is most effective, because coyotes don't like intruders in THIER territory.

Now to work of off the CORRECT info that Howler gave us. When coyote pee in spots they are doing different things with that pee. Some are territory and some are not. How does a coyote know what the other coyote is trying to tell with that pee? Well, coyotes are able to let loose different levels of amonia in their urine depending on what message they are giving. If they just relieve themselves, there is a low level of it. If they are marking their territory then there is a higher level of it in their urine. I am not saying an intruding coyote will smell this and high tail it, but it will put them on guard!

Jake.. judging by the questions you ask and the other things you say.. Coming to you or taking your information for gold is the last thing I would do.. even in ohio coyotes act the same as any other coyote.. they ARE coyotes.. period.. Wow. I didn't see this post till today. I can't believe the mis-information that has been giving out by jake.

Coyotes howl year round, period. Right now is the best time of the year, besides spring, to get coyotes coming to howls. They are getting paired up, and ready to start mating. But what do I know, I've just added 2 more to the bag this afternoon. I'm only at 52 dogs for the season.

This is also a great time of the year to be dogging yotes. I imagine I'll have to explain that to Jake as well, unless he can google it. :eek:

A coyote is a coyote no matter where you live or where the coyote itself lives. I am from the Central Ohio area Jake and the coyote are no different here than anywhere else.

In ohio coyotes act a little different because there are always cars and people around a house every 1/2 mile etc. I aggree that the all act the same but coyotes tend to be more pressured around here and dont act the same( with their howling anyways). They dont howl as much around here as much as they do in say south dakota. By the way ive killed 36 since christmas.

Around here we have an alarm testing go off because of the VX plant down the road and if I go out in the woods when its sounding the coyotes go nuts. Good locator. Also works when the train gos by and blows its wistle. Its like that all year long

Thats pretty good, to bad they dont respond to hardely nothing around here. I can get a response about 2-5 times a week if im lucky. They just dont travel in big packs around here like they do out west which really hoovers!

Well we all know that west coyote are more vocal than east coyotes.. but i asked what time of the year they are more likely to be vocal.. and that question, whether they live in the east or west, the answer is the same..

Generally speaking yes it is the same but i wont hear it around here as much because the lack of big packs and so on and so forth, but i do aggree with you on them being more vocal at the same times.

around here it is weird, I will get a huge vocal response at say 9 pm in an area, then a week later same time same place, Nothin!

remember, they have a huge range, they might not be home at the same time each night. just a thought!

our coyotes see lots of humans also. 90% of NH population lives from concord south. And our coyotes tend to have the same ideas. cars, houses, people are nothin to these coyotes!

Them being used to people is in one instince a good thing because they are easier to hunt but it is also bad because they start going through towns and getting peoples pets and just reaking havic!!!

36? Come on Jake!! It's time to cut the bullpucky![:o] You're telling all of us that you have called and killed 36 coyotes since Christmas!! I'm sorry Jake, but with each post you make, your credibility slides further down a slippery slope.
It was just back on 2-2-07 that you were asking for help. A guy that is calling and killing that many coyotes doesn't ask for help, they give out good advice!![8D]

OK everybody don't even try to relate or even try to figure this guy JAKE out.I have been watching all of his responses to everything that he thinks he knows ever since he started the name calling with Browning204, and I can see a pattern that the moderators of this forum need to watch him, for he is in violation of 1 of the forum rules. Jake needs to grow up and be more open to others that try and correct him on issues he obviously nows nothing about and stop the temper tantrums and lashing out at everybody that disagrees with him. I personally am turned off by any thread that I see with him on it cause I know 9 times out of 10 he is going to have the last word no matter what. Right or Wrong :(

Actually i live near Jacob Smith (jake smith09 obviously) and he is completly right about coyotes being harder to hunt in Ohio. We have hunted together a few times and he really knows what hes doing when hes hunting coyotes around here. Ohio is at an all time hight for yotes but they are just so wide spread and not many packs to be very easy to hunt. The environment and type of food they can eat is less abundant and different also. They are difficult to howl in this time of year also. It sounds crazy but is very true.

I have been trying to get started hunting coyotes in N-Central IL, and have been trying to gather info from this thread.

Needless to say, I'm a newbie here and this stupid Jake guy is already getting on my nerves, just reading what has been said by him in this thread.

He makes up "knowledge", and then tries to enforce it on others who are corrective of him. He sent a threatening PM and then told the guy to spell "qoute" correctly, when he doesn't even use correct grammer himself. Not to mention he made up asecondname (canislutrans)to try and give himself kudos. Without his little blooper of posting his own name under canislutrans, I still would have known it was him by the grammer.

If I had to take my best guess, I would say he is 14-15 years old, and I betcha I'm right.
