Default RE: .223 vs. .22-250

I knowa .22-250with a slow twist rate will not stabilizea heavy grain bullet thatwhy I have a .223 with a 1 in 8 twist so I can shootfor instance hornady 75 gr bthp (which I just bought every box of it I could find) and also shoots the lite side too. What I was stating was that the grain of the bullet being equal (both 50 grain for instance) in .223 and .22-250 the .22-250 will have a flatter trajectory curve. I wasin no waytrying to state that a .22-250 with a 1 in 12 twist could stabilize the heavier grain bullet and was notimplying it could. What I was statingwas all thingsbeing equalthe .22-250 will shoot flatter that is why on the chart I used the same grain bullet (50 grain moly coated vmax). I also am not implying in any way of the long range terminal effect of thelighter bullets vs. the heavy bullet. The 75 grainbullet does carry more energy after300 yards and we are not disputing that. When I say flat shooting I'm only refering to trajectory curve and not energy in any way, just thought I would clarify. Merry x-mas and have a safe new year.

here is a .223 hornady 75 grain bthp (amax)
Trajectory (inches)
Muzzle 100 yd 200 yd 300 yd 400 yd 500 yd
-1.50 1.90 0.00 -8.30 - 24.10 -49.30

.22-250 Rem., 50 gr. V-MAX MOLY 83363
Trajectory (inches)
Muzzle 100 yd 200 yd 300 yd 400 yd 500 yd
-1.50 0.80 0.00 - 4.90 - 15.20 - 32.80

Here is the heaviest bullet they have for the .22-250:

.22-250 Rem., 60 gr. SP 8039

Trajectory (inches)
Muzzle 100 yd 200 yd300 yd 400 yd 500 yd

I have owned both. A Rem 700 classic and ruger 77 sporter in 223, and a Rem BDL and H&R Ultra in 22-250. They both shot about the same out to three hundred. Four was no real stretch for the 223 on Groundhogs. The 223 would handle heavier bullets better. I tried to shoot a GH at a lassered593yds with the .223 using 50gr Sierra Varmit Kings. I was holding about 5ft over his back and he never even flinched. I have however nailed hogs at the other end of the rock ledge he was lying on with the 22-250. That would put those shots a little over 600yds. If long range is your game go with the 22-250. I you want a good light recoiling cartridge in a light walking around rifle, go with the 223. You can also find gads of cheap bulk ammo for shooting if you are not a reloader.

I appreciate the capabilities of heavier bullets and that is one of the reason I have over $1700 (ouch!) tied up in my current rig. My sentiments are that with the stretch bullets, the 223 starts to act like a different rifle. The 22-250 still continues to sell locally and has a hard core following for pests hereabouts. When I talk to them about wind, basically the response is, yeah, but it gets there faster. So although I sold my 22-250 off, I will admit it is fast. Blazingly fast. Bullet strike is spectacular. No yote holds up against it. So what the hey. Look at tables and choose what works for you. Better yet, buy both!

Biscuit jake has a point. Buy both of them and you will be set for anything.

True enough. but some of us have a budget.

I got the .223 earlier this year (my wife lets me buy one a year)

This next year will either be the 22-250 or 45acp

RJH, .22-250's do not shoot flatter than a .223! A .223 is considered one of the flattest shooting guns on the market.
Where'd you get that information? The.22-250 is quite a bit flatter than a .223.

I'm in the market for a predator gun. Coyotes, groundhogs, bobcats. I'd like to get a 300 yd shot if necessary (for the challenge), but the .223 seems cheaper to shoot. Any advice?
You might also want to take a look at a .243, using 75-80 gr. bullets. They're even flatter than the .22-250, and you have the option of moving up to a 100 gr. bullet for deer-saized game.

She lets you get one a year? I have to fight for every onei come home with. I have found it is easier to beg for forgiveness, than ask for permission.
