A .223 would be a good choice, and ammo is cheaper for the .223 than most other calibers.

A single shot, like an H&R or NEF would probably be your least expensive option (around $200). Add a good quality scope, and you're probably looking at around $400.

A good bolt gun would add an additional $200 or so, but your budget may not allow that.

Savage arms makes a nice rifle at an affordable price... I would definitely look into these. If you are looking into saving big $ lean toward the single shot rifles.

I have a savage mod 10 in .243 Win - Great all around gun and dead accurate - I shoot woodchucks all summer at 300 - 400 yrds then take it deer hunting and coyote hunting in the fall and it does the job on all of them - the other two calibers you are looking at are great for ground hog and coyote but a bit too small to double as a deer rifle.

i prefer a .243 for an all purpose rig, although since a rifle will not do you any good for deer season i would get a 22-250 as a dedicated predator rifle.

The Stevens is a fine firearm for the money.

Very good information here... you've got all the good input you need. Savage, Stevens and H&R are your best options. As the price goes down, so does the quality, but none of the three would I shy you away from. I own several guns made by each manufacturer and still reccomend them to friends.

Look over the prices on those various models andchoose one that fits your budget .223 or 22-250 will work fine- good luck.
