I prefer a rifle. If you use a shotgun you'll have to bring em close. I suggest with in40 yards. With a rifle you can take coyotes at close ranges as well as long ranges. But if you are looking for a challenge pick upyour scatter gun and give it a shot!

There have been many a coyote missed with a rifle with-in shotgun range!! Myself included. There's lots of guys that team up, one guy sits with a shotgun, the other with the rifle. Shotguns loaded with 3" 4 buck, that have been patterned well, are very effecetive out to 50 yards easily.
I'll be in a calling contest this weekend and the shotgun/rifle combo will be how we hunt.

My father inlaw and I do just what you said Howler. HE with shotgun me with a 204. Here in Michigan we can't use rifle at night so I take the .22 mag out or a 12 ga. with number 2 shot or dead coyote load as we can't use buckshot at night here either and the shotgun does the trick!!

Sometimes, especially with a fox, a shotgun is a handy tool to have. Foxes are bad about running trotting in, circling, and leaving with out ever stopping, making it hard to get a scoped rifle on them to make the shot.

Thanks for the help guys.
Hunting a couple different properties in Northern WV. One has some open fields, but the other is overgrown and very thick, so I will arm accordingly. Just starting out yote hunting. I've read most of this board, but what are the things I absolutely have to remember?
