The season in Michigan runs from Sept. 15 thru March 1, and it's been a good one again this year. Lots of squirrels in my area. It's all mature oak forest in this area and there was a very good acorn & beech nut crop. I've been getting a few each time out and have taken a limit(5) on several occasions.

Nowadays, I'm happy hanging out in the woods and dropping one or two per hunt. I think that I've killed about 6, all with a .17hmr. However, far fewer people are hunting squirrels in my area than in the past, and there are lots of 'em. If I wanted to do a serious hunt, I could likely limit out every time. When I was younger, it was mostly greys, then the reds started taking over. Not it seems like the greys are back in greater numbers now. The season starts August 1 in Illinois, which I think is way too early, unless you are comfortable killing she squirrels with signs that they are still nursing young.

The .17 is working like a charm. I have actually taken all body shots, usually aiming right behind the front legs.It makes a good sized exit wound, but doesn't cause that much damage. Maybe its the bullet type i use, or I'm just lucky, since other folks state that they have had much more damage. I'm not too concerned about the rib cage anyway. The .17 is alsodeadly on crows that I run across while squirreling. I dropped one out of a tree top at about 240 yards one day.

308,

I bought a box of 50 Remingtons for about 10 bucks some time ago. They are all now rolling around loose in a dresser drawer, so I'm not sure exactly what they are.
