RE: advice on gun to pick
The 30-30 is fine FINE medicine for deer and coyotes at closer ranges but simply doesn't have the "reach" that the other high powers can offer. If you'll never use that extra reach the 30-30 is a great choice. The standards of quality (marlin and Win lever guns) can both be had new for <$300. And while I like both the 30-30 round and leverguns in general ('cause I'm a leftie) if there's going to be killing done past 150yards I'd opt for the cartridges mentioned above.

The 30-30, with the help of Hornady's New LeveRevolution 165gr bullet, will when zeroed with a scope will easily clean clocks out to 200 yrds plus on yotes. However, if you got the money a good .243 will fill the ticket nicely.
Good Luck !! |
RE: advice on gun to pick
Just me and my trusty .308 telling you if you don't want the .20 caliber realm, the .308 is defiantely an accurate round to do the job.

RE: advice on gun to pick
Last fall I purchased a rem 22-250 and am extremely pleased with the performance. Took a couple of deer with it very accurate and shells are cheap. I shootingWin 45 gr jhp with muzzle velocity @ 4000 per second. I don't handload but I buy my shells @ wal-mart for 24.00 bucks a box of 40., can't handload for cheaper than that. There are lots of manufactures who make 22-250 just look around, up here that seems to be the rifle of choice and they hold their value if you ever want to re-sell it. If dollars are tight consider advertising and buy a good used one, you won't be sorry. Loco |

RE: advice on gun to pick
there are so many nice bullets out today that it's hard to pick. i would either go with a .243 or a .308. .243 is a nice bullet with a large bullet weight selection (55gr-100+ i believe, 55 gr are real flat shooting screamers). .308 is a good all purpose round and has a large bullet selection also. probably won't get the large weight difference as the .243 but there are a lot of .308 bullets out there including military surplus witch is nice for target shooting and it's cheep when bought in bulk.

RE: advice on gun to pick
I would recommend a .243 over a 25-06. Simply because the ammo is chaeper and if that is a concern it can be a big problem. i own a 25-06 and have taken many deer with it and love it, but ammo can be expensive and scarce.
