have you looks into the stevens model rifles made but savage. they are very much at all and EXTREMLY accurate. i would go in a 308 cal. (JMO) but if you get it you can get different grains for all kinds of hunting from yotes to deer to elk for that matter. i use a 308 and so do alot of others i know. again just my 2 cents but worth lookin into

well, if your looking at a good gun for both and remotly cheap i would go with a 223, 243, or a 25-06 if your looking at going after bigger game than whitetail as well, then i would go with a 270 or a .30 caliber

For varmints and whitetails, a 25-06 is hard to beat. There are a lot of nice bullets in the 110 t0 120 grain for whitetails, and lighter 75 and 87 grain bullets for coyotes. Lighter guns like the .222 and .223 work better for varmints if you are saving the pelts, but they aren't necessarily choice deer rifles.

I would also recommend the Stevens/Savages. I believe the only real difference is that the savages have the "accutrigger" which, considering Savage use to get bad reviews because of their triggers and because a Savage is still cheaper than any of the Big names would make me recommend the Savages above the stevens. .243 would be a good caliber as well as the 308. One lends itself to varmints but is certianly a capable deer cartridge the other is pretty much perfect for deer but may be a little harsh on the pelts of varmints (IF that's a concern) If saving pelts isn't really a concern any of the popular deer cartridges that don't kick alot would make excellent double-duty rifles. .243, 25-06,270, 7mm-08, 308 Now I would consider a 260 remington (a 308 necked down to .264 (or 6.5mm))also, its a real nice cartridge on ballistic papers and the 6.5mm bullets have amazing BCs and SD...but I handload, and assuming you don't a wide selection of available ammo is of serious consideration. I'd give the 270 and 308 the nod for that. Check around your local stores and see what are the most popular calibers around your area are, it'll make selecting a "flexible" cartridge alot easier.

Savage is a great gun maker. I would be careful going with the low caliber's if you will be hunting deer. I wouldn't go under a .243

as stated above. i have a savage model12 stainlessin 308. i would go ifor it if you have 500 t0 spend. if not go stevens. i shot my brothers and its not to much different than the savage but the trigger would be a little hard to get used to i think

I would recomend the Ruger M77 Mk II they are only about $475 at walmart and they are extreamly accurate. My 300 WSM and .223 will shoot .5MOA at 100 yards. For a good varmint and deer gun I would say the 25-06 or .260 would be good choices.

What about a 30 - 30 for Coyote???

RE: advice on gun to pick

The 30-30 is fine FINE medicine for deer and coyotes at closer ranges but simply doesn't have the "reach" that the other high powers can offer. If you'll never use that extra reach the 30-30 is a great choice. The standards of quality (marlin and Win lever guns) can both be had new for <$300. And while I like both the 30-30 round and leverguns in general ('cause I'm a leftie) if there's going to be killing done past 150yards I'd opt for the cartridges mentioned above.

The 30-30, with the help of Hornady's New LeveRevolution 165gr bullet, will when zeroed with a scope will easily clean clocks out to 200 yrds plus on yotes. However, if you got the money a good .243 will fill the ticket nicely.

Good Luck !!

Just me and my trusty .308 telling you if you don't want the .20 caliber realm, the .308 is defiantely an accurate round to do the job.

You been able to get your hands on some and try it out? I haven't seen any around, but have been waiting to try some. Probably as much for the wow factor as anything.

RE: advice on gun to pick

Last fall I purchased a rem 22-250 and am extremely pleased with the performance. Took a couple of deer with it very accurate and shells are cheap. I shootingWin 45 gr jhp with muzzle velocity @ 4000 per second. I don't handload but I buy my shells @ wal-mart for 24.00 bucks a box of 40., can't handload for cheaper than that. There are lots of manufactures who make 22-250 just look around, up here that seems to be the rifle of choice and they hold their value if you ever want to re-sell it.
If dollars are tight consider advertising and buy a good used one, you won't be sorry.

there are so many nice bullets out today that it's hard to pick. i would either go with a .243 or a .308. .243 is a nice bullet with a large bullet weight selection (55gr-100+ i believe, 55 gr are real flat shooting screamers). .308 is a good all purpose round and has a large bullet selection also. probably won't get the large weight difference as the .243 but there are a lot of .308 bullets out there including military surplus witch is nice for target shooting and it's cheep when bought in bulk.

I would recommend a .243 over a 25-06. Simply because the ammo is chaeper and if that is a concern it can be a big problem. i own a 25-06 and have taken many deer with it and love it, but ammo can be expensive and scarce.

RE: advice on gun to pick

I currently have a Savage Modle 11 .243 win - I used it this year for the first time on whitetails and I have used it for a couple of years on coyotes and other varminits. i love it. The only thing I plan on changing for next season is putting a lower powered scope on it for deer hunting. It has been my varmint and predator rig so i had a 6 x 18 power scope on it and there were a couple of missed opportunities on some nice deer this year simply because even at 6X it is just too much for close range - I plan on putting a 3 x 9 on it for next season. One thing I would recomend is get one with the accu trigger - it is nice for a varmint rig - It wasn't available when I purchased mine. I shoot 100 grain federal ammo on just about everything just so I get used to where bullet placement is going to be at different ranges instead of jumping around different ammo -

the 25-06 or .243 are great choices for deer and varmits dut if you are worried about the hide then get a smaller caliber like a 223 or 22-250
which will still easily take a deer if you put in the right spot.
