Coyote hunting with a .22LR?
#41
Shoot a coyote in the lungs with a .22lr, like you did the deer with your .308, and you won't find him UNLESS you have tracking snow because there won't be a blood trail worth a beans to follow, and he'll go a long ways before falling over. Did ya kill it, sure, but finding it is a whole nother matter.

un-educated hunters will use a .22 for hunting coyotes.
yes they will kill one.....but for anyone that knows squat about a
.22 knows that they are mass produced by the millions and are NOT
designed as a predator load.they are NOT designed to be extremly
accurate at long range and so..... CANNOT be justified to be used at ranges of a hundred yards. THERE IS NO WAY IN HELL YOU CAN GUARANTEE A HEAD SHOT AT THAT DISTANCE. it's unethical and we as a sporting community don't need that kind of reputation.IMHO !

Can it be done-yes.
Should you try it-NO!!!!
All animals deserve respect and we should do our best to insure quick humane kills.Anything less makes the lies the anti hunting groups say about hunters true. It's just that simple.

Everyone seems to be making it a bigger issue than it is. Just as some use handguns or archery for hunting and it increases the challenge, .22 can be used for coyotes, it just makes it harder
Like it or not the .22 is a very funny round. As some have said, Ive shot coon in the head point blank wih them and it just made the coon mad.Had a similiar experience with a dog, had an old one that had something wrong wih it, he got mean and had o pu him down, from about 10 yrds I hit him right between the eyes, rolled him and he got up and ran off.Had to get the 12 guage to finish him off.
On the other hand Ive seen deer shot in the lungs with a .22 go down very fast, yes I know is illegal to shoot deer with a .22.The round also has a tendency to ricochet around if it hits bone, ask any ER doctor whos ever dealt wih it, they can just do crazy things once they hit and go off at wierd angles through the body.
Ive shot several yotes in snares with them and only had to shoot one more than once.
But the round is not reliable enough, even with well placed shots, to kill quickly, and make recovery possible on most predators with any consistency.Yotes arent my favorite animal by any means but even they dont deserve to be crippled with a bullet that never shoulda been used and left to die a slow painfull death because your looking for a "challenge"Use the right gun for the job or stay home, its that simple.

Hunting coyotes with a 22lr will result in more wounded coyotes than it will dead coyotes. Will a 22lr kill a coyote, yes, but if you don't place a perfect head shot(brain) the coyote will run off and either die eventually, or live with a bullet in it! There will be no blood trail, to speak of, so don't expect to trail one that has been hit, unless you have tracking snow! The 22lr is a rabbit/squirrel/target gun!
Howler got it right from the start........I thought you might want to read it again.

yes you CAN kill a coyote with 22. under 50 yard with a well placed shot i think you shouldnt have much of a problem if your using a semi auto put a couple in him just make sure you do your very best to make your shots lethal if your unsure of the shot dont take it!

Your better off using a 12 gauge with a good dose of hevi shot dead coyote than a 22lr. Coyotes are tough critters, a 22lr just doesnt pack enough wallop to do the job consistantly. If your worries about ammo cost, recoil at least step up to a 22 mag or the 17 HMR for close range work.

Everyone try shooting a Porcupine with a 22.
You have to shoot it 5 times to kill it(those things got tough skulls)
Somehow I dont think that a 22. will kill a coyote when it takes 5 shots to kill a porcupine at 10 yards.
Although I have never killed a coyote so I would not know.
But thats my opinion on the topic.
