If you are looking for a medium sized handgun, look at the Springfield XD9 or XD40 in the service edition. I have the xd9 and can't say enough good about it. very reasonably priced too.

If you are using this pistol for carry, you should really look into a small frame pistol like a Kahr, or Kel-tek. A 9mm is fine for CCW but a .40 is a little better just more expensive to practice...
